Tagine, 1-3 Fernlea Road, Balham, London, SW12 9RT - Moroccan ...

Tagine is authentically Moroccan in both decor and cuisine.

That is what you can expect from Zizou Tagine in Balham.

Exiting another Northern Line delay ridden disaster, we arrived sweaty, flustered, but most importantly late and in no mood for pleasantries... Once through the velour drapes at Balham’s Tagine Morrocan restaurant, we were shown to our tables without protest or judgment.

I opted for the chicken cous cous, while the blonde sitting across from me solicited lamb tangine.

The spirit of Marrakech was indeed in Balham, and as we learned a few times that night, this music was promptly followed by the arrival of a birthday cake at the lucky patrons table... Why not I say, though I must question the odds of at least 4 birthday parties at one place on any given night.

At this time we got a tap on the shoulder, and after some wild gesticulating and futile reasoning, we were asked to move to another table.

Unfortunately for the establishment instead of leaving you with a final thought on the quite reasonable food, I say don’t be late, or consider taking your time, and you might leave with a good taste in your mouth....read more

I could have eaten this all day!For her mains her Ladyship had the Mix Mashawi (£13.50)- a mixed grill of chicken, lamb and minced lamb cooked over charcoal and attractively served with a spiced flatbread, salad and a mountain of chips.

I went for the sea bass tagine, a Moroccan style hotpot with the fish baked in a rich tomato sauce, with the tang of preserved lemon and herbs (£ 13.50).

I went for the sea bass tagine, a Moroccan style hotpot with the fish baked in a rich tomato sauce, with the tang of preserved lemon and herbs (£ 13.50).

Served with a really attractive bed of couscous the fish felt rather swamped in the tomato sauce but still had a good flavour and texture.Raspberry and mango sorbet (£3.95) was a light and refreshing way to end the meal but probably didn’t need the extra dusting of sugar as it was quite sweet already.

Lovely food and staff.

It was a lovely evening and everyone enjoyed their food.

We had the best evening here, the food is amazing and traditional and the staff and entertainment were absolutely amazing and super tentative.

Food was lovely, service was not.

Lovely food and great friendly service.

food

With its alfresco tables and North African lounge décor enhanced by a sprawl of Berber cushions, Tagine looks inviting, if a little oddly located, opposite the Bedford pub.

This restaurant has been serving Moroccan food here for a long time and with a fairly lengthy menu that covers all the bases: kemia cold and hot, grills, couscous, and (of course) the dishes that give the restaurant its name.

Desserts are mostly French in orientation, and there's a 'Party Menu' of dishes to share at £27.50.

Tagine makes up for its lack of a license by serving fruity drinks as well as fresh mint tea, and you can finish the meal with shisha - traditional flavoured tobacco smoked from a hookah.

The restaurant has opened a basement bar/lounge downstairs offering full food and drink service, and the terrace is for those who want to enjoy the fresh air (with or without a shisha).
