The Cellars

The Cellars

A fantastically restored pub that has great food, wines and ales served in a friendly and welcoming way as it’s reason for opening the doors each day.

Kick back and relax (by the open fire if you get here early and stake your claim) and enjoy the daily changing menu that is sourced from local suppliers, compliment this with the ever changing range of ales – always six available and a further ten beers on tap sourced across Europe.

Did we say that we are also dog friendly!

The Cellars Alehouse | Maidstone's Micropub

Review analysis
food

The Cellars Alehouse is Maidstone’s newest micropub dedicated to the enjoyment of cellar-kept real ale and real ciders dispensed straight from the cask in an environment that promotes conversation and general social interaction with other members of the human race.

Micropubs are characterised not just by what they do – great real ale straight from the cask – but also by what they don’t do.

Children: Our Premises Licence does not allow children under 18 years of age access to the pub.

The Cellars doesn’t have a restaurant or a garden, the stairs are quite steep and narrow and the floor is uneven.

Please bear in mind that cash is still king and if you are able to pay in cash it reduces our costs and helps to keep our prices down.

The Black Rat Restaurant, located on Chesil street at the bottom of the town centre, recently celebrated its tenth year!

Located nearby is our kitchen garden where we grow some of our own herbs and vegetables, all of which helps to inspire the kitchen team to create the menu using wild, unusual and forgotten ingredients.

The Front of House team is a small group of experienced hospitality characters who pride themselves on their personal service styles and, together with Head Chef Jon Marsden-Jones and his Kitchen Team.

The owner, David Nicholson, has been in Winchester since 1995 running The Black Boy Pub just across the road in Wharf Hill.

ambience   drinks

This pub was editorially chosen for inclusion.

Among the selection of pubs around Newington Green, however, it actually comes across as quite understated.

The pub has a typical gastropub menu, a promising if not huge wine list, but a very strong selection of six real ales during our visit including a few previously unseen on Londonist's travels.

Plenty of small dining tables dot the room, in addition to a selection of ageing standing lamps with that style of lampshade old ladies seem to favour, and the occasional three-piece suite.

There's even a TV set that has to be 40 years old, though we failed to pluck up the courage to switch it on to see if it contained an endless repeat of one of those lost episodes of Doctor Who people are always looking for.
