Trangallán is a dream local which twinkles with warmth | Metro News

It’s cold outside, freezing cold, but inside Trangallán everything twinkles with warmth, from the flattering light cast by the chandeliers over the artfully mismatched furniture – all flea market finds, all for sale – to the very real welcome from the staff.

If the decor is haphazard, the menu and wine list are anything but.

The daily-changing menu hints at a confident hand in the kitchen coupled with smart sourcing: grassy-green and peppery Italian olive oil; dense crusty bread from cult local pizzeria Datte Foco; fresh fish and seafood from ‘our neighbour Les’.

Neither am I sure about their self-description as ‘a gastro-cultural space’.

If I had Trangallán at the end of my road, you’d have to prise me out: it’s pretty much my dream local.

They serve rustic and flavour packed dishes which are a cut above the usual tapas offerings.

If you’re looking for tapas restaurants in North London, places to eat in Newington Green or Spanish food in Stoke Newington then you must book at a table at the Trangallan Tapas Restaurant.

“Trangallan is a romantic bohemian restaurant serving rustic tapas dishes in the heart of Newington Green, a must for foodies and lovers!”

Homegirl London The menu changes frequently and offers something different from the standard tapas.

On our visit, the selection included a bread basket with Rioja Arbequina olive oil and Manzanilla olives which will get you off to a good start as you peruse the menu.

London has no end of tapas restaurants, which can make it extremely difficult to know where to head if you’re after something special.

Navarro’s Navarro's Navarro's is a tiny, family run Spanish restaurant situated along London's infamous Charlotte Street.

The cosy restaurant is the perfect place to head for date night or even a wine-filled evening with pals.

Trangallán, we learn, is a word from Galicia for a kind of bohemian ne’er-do-well.

And this little former shop certainly has the right bohemian feel, with its junk shop furniture (tables for two are especially intimate) and easy-going welcome from the mostly Galician crew who run it.

It’s billed as a ‘gastro-cultural space’, and has hosted a variety of performances in its basement, though these now play second fiddle to the food.

The menu changes frequently and mostly avoids routine tapas in favour of more imaginative compositions, revealing a good deal of skill and sophistication, not to mention enthusiasm, in the kitchen.

Food prices, like the overall quality, are a little above the tapas norm, and there’s a short but superior wine list, especially strong on fine sherries.

Trangallan Tapas Bar, London | Pub Restaurants - Yell

tapas menu is very small and extremely expensive (e.g. 13£ for a chewy piece of meat smaller than my thumb).

I don't mind spend some extra tenner for a good dinner, but the quality/price relation here is incredibly low, nothing to see with the traditional tapas you can find in Spain.
