The Candlemaker

The Candlemaker

Formerly The Greyhound, the pub takes its inspiration from the candle factory that operated for over a hundred years in nearby York Road.

An additional nod to the pub’s sixties heyday as a thriving market tavern is represented by the colourful pop-art and psychedelic imagery adorning the walls.

But this weekend Andrew and I decided to take a break from wedding chores, and went out and about in London, have a stroll and do the things we used to enjoy before Weddinggedon took hold of our lives.

Under Michele’s command, The Candlemaker serves traditional English food – think rib-sticking, hangover cure things, just like Granny used to make.

He said we absolutely had to have the six-hour, slow-roasted lamb shepherd’s pie.

Andrew went for a roast, and I had some chicken wings too (the Shepherd’s Pie as to share).

Sated and happy, with our wedding chores feeling a million miles away, we hoped back on the Ginger Line back to North London feeling restored.

food

The food at Battersea’s The Candlemaker comes from a former Soho pop-up called The Full English.

As the name suggests the idea is retro British food inspired by the good old greasy spoon, so there’s scampi and chips, cauliflower cheese, bubble and squeak and of course Full English breakfasts available all day.

There is just one dessert listed on the menu - oat crumble with apples and custard - but the seasonal special is Eton Mess, with plump juicy strawberries, meringue and fresh cream.Everything is made from scratch: stocks, chutneys and tartare sauce, and food is sourced as locally as possible.

So passionate is chef Michele Cremona about this she’s running a campaign called Battersea MyStreet backed by the local MP, in a bid to reinvigorate the weekly market on the high street with local butchers, greengrocers and fishmongers.

She also runs a ‘herb hospital’, growing her own herbs to experiment with in recipes and helping locals with their own herb nurturing. There is so much to love about the place: the food, the ethos behind it and the venue itself, with colourful pop art on the walls, tables made from planks of wood, and a heated garden.

We arrived with our party half an hour before the booking and told them we were here but would have a drink outside.

We were informed that they did not have our booking and brunch had already ended.

After half an hour of being there the barman came over and advised us that they had run out of the fizz they use for brunch so they had brought us a nicer bottle of prosecco which would have to be our last.

We disputed this advising we had already paid for a bottomless brunch in full and had 1 and a half hours left of it.

We had arranged a festive brunch with friends and the whole thing was embarrassing, irritating and disappointing.

Quirky signs of cupcakes and the likes were hung on the brick walls and the outdoor space had a shaded area to the right for anyone looking to cool down and escape the sun’s rays.

Inside, comfy chairs and leather sofas were spaced across the floor giving the space a homely undertone while a mesh of wooden panels and brick work gave a balanced, airy feel to the venue.

My partner in crime and I ordered their chicken wings, which was the replacement dish for my beloved buttermilk chicken, a portion of chips and cauliflower cheddar cheese with spring onions and paprika.

With many pretentious venues hitting London soil it’s nice to know that a place like The Candlemaker exists to please the people of South London the good old fashioned way, with tasty food and ice cold beverages.

The Candlemaker cooks and serves British comfort food with ease and has proven to be a solid retreat for evening drinking, munching and banter.
