"GORDON RAMSEY" described the food at Retsina as “authentic and delicious, tasted fantastic”, and the restaurant as "exceptional".

"TIMEOUT" The food exhibits the enthusiastic attention to ingredient-quality that some of London’s established Greek restaurants have abandoned.

Mazi (which means 'together') stands in a street behind the Coronet cinema, on the site of Costas Grill, one of London's first Greek restaurants which opened its doors in 1957.

When I asked why there was no sign of hummus or pitta on the menu, Adrien briskly replied, "Because we're a Greek restaurant, not a Cypriot".

Angie's lobster was flavoured with basil and a slug of Metaxa, the tourist-destroying Greek brandy (luckily this was the 12-year-old version).

Along with the other new experiences of dinner chez Mazi, I was happy to be introduced to Mastiha, a liqueur from Chios, from a tree that weeps crystal 'tears' which you crush and add to alcohol.

Sleek, modern restaurant serving impeccable Greek cuisine – the milk-fed shoulder of lamb for two people is a house speciality.

The Primrose Hill regulars were so loyal, and so damn regular, it was often impossible to get a table, so we were fortunate to enjoy star treatment from our school friend Minos, owners Zeta and Harry’s hardworking son.

Photo: SEWhen the restaurant moved to much larger premises in leafy Belsize Village, Minos took over as his father retired.

Mum continued to deliver her steadfastly traditional dishes with panache –a melting lamb souvla, deeply charcoaled chicken kebabs and killer calamari – while son charmed all-comers with his effervescent front-of-house schtick.

It was a dynamic offering, big on flavour and personality, which peaked in 2010 when Zeta’s famous mixed grill came within a whisker of winning Gordon Ramsey’s reality TV show The F-Word.

Photo: SESadly, on our visit, the famous lamb souvla has only just started its slow-cook process for the dinner service, but our mixed grill, the Ramsay fave, proves a worthy substitute.

By day five I am repeating the famous dictum by the American food writer Jeffrey Steingarten: never take advice on matters culinary from a people who 'pickle their cheese and put tree sap in their wine'.

Of course there are cheaper Greek restaurants in London, more intimate Greek restaurants in London, perhaps even better Greek restaurants.

There are slightly woody little olives and crisp radishes and a plate of hummus.

To these we added fresh crisp spinach and cheese pies, and a rustling plate of deep-fried anchovies.

Alongside these are two side dishes: a strange, butter pasta thing mined with chicken shrapnel, and a Greek salad with feta, which is where milk goes to die.
