That’s right, Jon and I were invited to dinner at Ahi Poke in Fitzrovia, London which exclusively serves up the super trendy raw fish salads.

Pronounced POH-kay, poke is a Hawaiian raw fish salad and the principles are simple: start with a bed of rice (or perhaps quinoa if you want to be bang on trend), top with fresh and pickled vegetables (pineapple and grapefruit work too, or why not avocado) then finish with your seafood!

I was initially a bit surprised to see soy sauce on each of the tables but ginger, soy, spring onions and sesame all add to the heady mix of flavours in a bowl of poke.

If you’re not brave enough to have a go at building your own bowl then Ahi Poke have a couple of choices on the menu to get you started.

The Sweet Green bowl cam with kale, mushroom, edamame, confit ginger, radish and carrot all tossed in a sweet ponzu sauce.

Ahi Poke offers a good – if London-ised – version of poke in a short but tasty menu with an assembly line approach to fresh preparation.

For my recent lunch at Ahi Poke, I had regular size (but plenty ample) bowl with a rice base, a scoop of ahi tuna (mixed with scallions and black sesame), spicy mayo, edamame, coriander, red onion, and carrot, with an extra sprinkling of sesame and sliced avocado (£1 extra).

A had a taste of another topping, chilli grapefruit, on the side to see how it went with tuna.

I’d have loved some nori with my lunch as well.

Most of Ahi Poke’s preset poke (you can customise your own if you wish) substitute rice with other grain or vegetable bases which is probably just as well given the poor quality of the rice included with the Tuna Oahu.

Although a little unbalanced, there’s still enough to enjoy in Black Roe’s poke, especially the tuna and salmon variants, to make this Mayfair restaurant worth seeking out instead of the competition if you want a light yet filling meal.

All of Eat Poke’s salads used small grain rice that was a touch too firm, although it wasn’t bad as Ahi Poke in this regard.

Although the salmon poke used small cubes of unremarkable fish, this poke was still relatively pleasing thanks to the soft, malty rice, firm edamame and the double umami punch of seaweed and soy sauce.

Tuna poke was much the same as the salmon, but without the edamame and, of course, big meaty cubes of tuna taking the place of the salmon.

So Poke's DEFINITELY a thing at the moment, as there's another restaurant specialising in the Hawaiian fish dish on the way.

Ahi Poké is on the way to Fitzrovia with Poké and more on the menu.

The vibe they're aiming for is "simple Hawaiian beach shacks crossed with the laid back poké bar vibes of LA" LA is where owners Jeremy Coste, Gabriel Cohen-Elia and David Bellaiche researched the idea - they're also the people behind North Audley Cantine and the downstairs bar Chez Chow.

For that, you can choose a base (quinoa, sushi rice or red kale), protein (ahi tuna, the fish mainly used in poké, sea bream, salmon or marinated mushrooms), sauce and toppings.

They do have signature bowls - one includes ahi tuna, sushi rice, scallions, red onion, black sesame, avocado, furikake, sesame shoyu at £11.

With its cool blue interior, walls adorned with surfboards and dishes named ‘Heatwave’ and ‘Venice,’ Ahi Poké is about as close as you’ll get to a dip in the Pacific on your lunchbreak.

An eager team of staff make poké (Hawaiian bowls of sashimi fish with rice and veg, in case the trend has passed you by) to order from an open bar filled with fresh, vibrant ingredients.

You can choose straight off the menu or walk on the wild side with a build-your-own combination on a base of rice, quinoa or kale (or all three mixed together).

It may not weather the winter months but Ahi Poké gets refreshing summer food spot on.
