Somers Town Coffee House in Euston, London Pub Review and ...

More recently however, the fortunes of the Coffee House (its caffeine-related vocation having been more or less sidelined) have seemed to track the misfortunes of the surrounding neighbourhood, caught as it is between three main railway lines out of London and located on the more unfavoured side of the Euston Road.

However, perhaps with an eye to the future, or on the workers of the various NGOs and think-tanks (if not trade union bosses ) that have taken up residence nearby, the Coffee House underwent a major refurbishment a few years ago to become a really rather smart gastropub.

Lots of polished wood and subtle lighting, and a few of the (really cosy looking, high-backed) cushioned seats are very reminiscent of those that used to be found in the single-compartment portions of trains running out of several London terminals.

It's quite spacious, with a central island bar and it retains the feel of a proper (if upmarket) pub, as one side is given over more explicitly to dining, with the other good for both drinking and eating.

As a Charles Wells pub, Bombardier is usually available, along with a few other choices.

Chalton Street’s historic boozer with the slightly confusing name (harking back to when it was the only place for a coffee in the area, and largely frequented by foreigners) has a lot more to it than meets the eye.

Follow the steps up into a series of four rooms and the urban pub suddenly feels like a country house, many miles away from the hubbub of Euston and King’s Cross down below.

“There are three unique areas to the pub all under one roof, and each one completely different to the other,” says Anthony.

A genuinely different kind of boozer, in a great location under the trees in front of the regular market along Chalton Street.

This is box title The Somers Town Coffee House, 60 Chalton Street, NW1 1HS, open daily 8am-11pm, Cosy Kettle 5pm-late, see website for full info.

The Somers Town Coffee House is a curious find in the back streets of an area not really known for its dining and drinking options.

The pub (for it is a pub, the name dissembles) manages to perfectly straddle the oft-perilous tightrope between drinking den and restaurant, providing generous space both for punters who want a hearty meal, and those who just want to gurglescoff the ale.

The beer choice is numerically good, if less adventurous than other places in our Euston selection.

The new(ish) owners are experimenting with the place, and recently opened a basement cocktail bar, one of the first in this area.

Scientists like to drink, so the Somers Town will need all the space it can muster.

We pre-ordered all of our food but the Beef Wellington and pork belly were not available.

The waitress then came back and said there were no longer any vegetarian burgers and so more food orders had to be changed.

The actual food was good.

We were not offered coffee, probably best as the waitress was too busy to attend to us properly and it may not have been available.

It's a real shame as you are local to the Francis Crick Institute and we would have liked to have found a local, good food place for various events.
