Bow Bells in Bow, London Pub Review and Details

Review analysis
food

It looks a bit dingy on the outside and the surrounding area is a bit off-putting, but don't let that worry you - this is still an excellent local.

It has an interesting range of beers on the hand pumps and an extensive, value-for-money, food menu.

It has an interesting mix of locals that frequent the place and the service is prompt, friendly and attentive.

Every so often a coach load of tourists pops into the place, we're not sure why, maybe it's something to do with Bow Bells - except they're in the Christopher Wren church in Cheapside in the City.

Well, whatever the reason, the tourists like it too, and they won't be disappointed, as it's a top boozer.

St Mary-le-Bow is a historic church rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666 by Sir Christopher Wren in the City of London[2] on the main east–west thoroughfare, Cheapside.

According to tradition a true Cockney must be born within earshot of the sound of Bow Bells (which refers to this church's bells rather than St Mary and Holy Trinity, Bow Road, in Bow, an outlying village until the 19th century).

However, on the road from London to Lewes, the mileage is taken from the church door of St Mary-le-Bow.

[11] During the later Norman period the church, known as “St Mary de Arcubus”,[12][13] was rebuilt and was famed for the arches (“bows”) of stone.

Considered the second most important church in the City of London after St Paul's Cathedral, St-Mary-le-Bow was one of the first churches to be rebuilt after the fire by Christopher Wren and his office.

Bow Bells | Londonist

This pub was voted one of the best in Mile End and Bow by Londonist readers.

You can't really miss the Bow Bells.

We inadvertently timed our most recent visit to coincide with the weekly quiz, and then accidentally won... which didn't hurt our appreciation of this classic old pub.

The Bow Bells is also noted for its haunted ladies toilet, which has featured in numerous credulous TV shows.
