Chicama London Review: New Restaurant in Chelsea

It is also the perfect addition to Chelsea as it is fun, the menu is exciting and you can imagine that Pilates hotties will want to eat little dishes of raw fish and be healthy should they choose to.

The little cubes of fish were perfect and the tiger milk was citrusy, fresh and fantastic and the dish had a subtle kick from the jalapeno.

There could have been a bit more crab but the papaya and daikon was crunchy and the dish was summery and had a great kick, so so good!

Trout cooked in banana leaf with red quinoa and mango & ají limo sauce: we had high hopes for this dish but it was the worst of the night.

The mousse was thick and rich and delicious and the crumbs and other chocolate bits on top added great texture.

During my last visit to London, my friends and I got to visit one of London’s most interesting restaurants.

Situated in King’s Road, Chicama is a very pretty little restaurant that serves Peruvian seafood.

I wasn’t familiar with any dishes on the menu, as I said I’ve never tried a Peruvian restaurant before but it’s a tapas kind of place where you order lots of small dishes that are designed for sharing.

If you’re a vegetarian and visiting Chicama, you might want to order the vegetarian feast where you get a selection of different veg dishes.

The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable, the food arrived quickly and it was nothing but happy vibes in this restaurant!

The room: exposed copper pipes, a long marble bar and the buzz of full capacity makes for a vibrant, stylish space.

The food: if you've eaten at Pachamama you'll recognise the Peruvian-themed small plates concept.

Instead there's seafood, fresh fish delivered daily from Cornwall and lovingly curated section of vegetable sides and small plates.

We were sold on an avocado jalepeno sauce to drizzle over the grilled fish, then persuaded to also try the mango & ají limo -- which we now want to pour over everything evermore.

Unless you're dining on Peru's Chicama coast, the restaurant's namesake, such fresh fish is a luxury.

Chelsea’s Chicama, sister restaurant to Pachamama, dedicates its menu to Peruvian seafood recipes – yes, you heard right Pescatarians, this King’s Road eatery is totally meat-free.

Chicama gets its seafood in daily from Cornwall (less Pisco than Lima, but more pasties), and gives it a decidedly South American makeover.

The sea bream with candied beetroot and compressed cucumber, sprinkled with pomegranate seeds, is a sweeter, fruitier approach to the dish than most in London, and welcome for it.

The blackened octopus is perfectly charred and is so tender it cuts like butter, luxuriating on top of a sundried tomato sauce with cauliflower and delicious golden nuggets of confit potato.

Fried aubergines with plantain miso and pecans are so richly smothered in the sauce its almost like having dessert, a decadently decked vegetable bread and butter pudding.

London’s appetite for Peruvian cuisine shows no sign of waning as Pachamama opens seafood restaurant Chicama in Chelsea.

What’s new?

Move over sushi, London’s globally minded eaters simply cannot get enough ceviche judging by the spate of new Peruvian openings in the capital (Martin Morales’ Casita Andina has launched in Soho, while Monmouth Kitchen hits Covent Garden later this week).

“Peruvian-inspired” Chicama is the prettiest of the lot with its beachy King’s Road terrace: pompom-bedecked and heatwave-ready with luscious cocktails and a meat-free menu.

Chicama is the second restaurant from the Pachamama Restaurant Group, whose vibey first restaurant Pachamama in Marylebone opened in 2014 to pretty much universal acclaim.

Flirty young staff, as impeccably groomed as the diners, squeeze between swish marble tables dishing out plates that are modish, mini and – on the whole – marvellous.

From the selection of small plates (the most exciting part of the menu) came a knockout seabass ceviche, its citrus-cured flesh layered not just with fragrant heritage tomatoes, but with toasted sweetcorn kernels and pickled red onion.

There’s a wide selection of chargrilled fish, like delicate fillet of sea bream.

But for sheer brilliance and creativity, the prize has to go to a simple ‘snack’ plate, of ‘tapioca marshmallows’.

Imagine a chewy, gluey piece of cooked-down tapioca, with the size, shape and springiness of a marshmallow, but also with a delicious cheesiness (it’s parmesan), crispy edges (they deep-fry the cubes before serving) and a mellow chilli sauce (made with the mild, fruity-with-a-hit amarillo peppers), for dipping.
