Smoking Goat, Shoreditch: restaurant review | Foodism

The closure of Ben Chapman's much-loved Smoking Goat on Denmark Street had many a Thai food fan up in arms, but the opening of a bigger site in Shoreditch last winter has softened the blow.

After that, there are London craft beers aplenty and a succinct and new-school wine list put together by blogger and all-round food guy Zeren Wilson – which veers, as you might imagine from the flavours of the food on offer, between refreshingly flinty, zesty white wine and the more aromatic side of the scale.

At Smoking Goat, you're in the 'food so hot it makes you delirious' realm (as you'd expect from an alumnus of David Thompson's iconic Bangkok restaurant Nahm) – none of which, we should point out, feels gratuitous.

For mains, the whole steamed sea bass, laced with aromatic spice, is a real treat, and the massaman goat curry – redolent with a punch of muscovado sweetness to complement its lazy heat – is a must-order.

Smoking Goat is dead; long live Smoking Goat.

Restaurant Review: Goat Chelsea, Fulham Road in London | Luxury ...

Leading food and drink writer Kris Griffiths vists Goat Chelsea, the modern Italian restaurant and cocktail bar located on Fulham Road in south west London.

It now comprises an all-day restaurant, a secret cocktail bar (more on that later) and lounge on different floors, and is bustling on most days of the week.

The menu here offers a modern take on Italian inspired food, with a selection of grilled meat and fish dishes alongside a range of imaginatively topped pizzas which are baked in a traditional wood-fired oven.

But more was to follow the meal, with Goat truly coming into its own with the option of a post-prandial drink downstairs in the ‘Chelsea Prayer Room’ – a clandestine, atmospherically-lit cocktail bar, replete with leather sofas, luxurious cushions and further vintage touches like dark wood cabinets filled with old books and bric-a-brac.

And the bar menu itself encompasses a different cocktail for each letter of the alphabet, meaning you could try a new one every week for a whole half of a year.

food

Before we start raving about the food at The Smoking Goat – which, with a couple of small caveats, we are going to be doing – we should pause to salute whoever thought up the name.

It’s also a bit pub-like, albeit pub-like with a twist, in the vein of The Slaughtered Lamb from An American Werewolf in London, or the Mexican vampire biker gogo bar in From Dusk Till Dawn, whose name I should probably not repeat in a family newspaper, despite it possessing the tongue-tripping qualities cited above.

By coincidence, the new branch of TSG occupies what was once a gogo bar, though this one was frequented by hard-faced Eastern Europeans and sweaty commodity brokers rather than Mexican vampire bikers.

They have put the kitchen behind a section of the bar, so you can see where the magic happens: a little row of wok-topped terracotta bowls, aglow with charcoal, as at chef Ben Chapman’s smaller Kiln, a restaurant where, were I to experience some sort of tragic domestic setback, and were they to set up some sort of cot for me, I think I could happily live.
