Stecca Restaurant Review - Chelsea's Delicious Flavours Of Italy

Originally from Rimini in Italy’s Emilia Romagna, Mr Stecca moved to London in 1999.

The menu at Stecca is not overbearing, and dishes are produced using the freshest seasonal and regional Italian ingredients.

With pasta being a speciality at Stecca, I decided to try the “Mezzelune” (translating as “half-moon”), which arrived with a creamy tomato sauce and a soft ricotta cheese centre that just oozed out as you cut into it.

My guest went for the tender fillet of beef with spinach, tomatoes and a red wine sauce (£29), and the kitchen at Stecca had done themselves proud.

Stecca is located at 14 Hollywood Rd, Chelsea, London SW10 9HY, United Kingdom.

Duck ragu with papardelle had pasta with excellent texture, the duck cooked all right but the ragu lacking the real depth of flavour that the best versions have (13/20).

It was topped with “black truffles”, which were summer truffles from Abruzzo.

Summer black truffles (Tuber Aestivum Vitt) look pretty but have a tiny fraction of the aroma of real black truffles (Tuber Melanosporum Vitt), which come into season in Europe around December – February.

Truffle labelling is highly confusing, as there are, apart from the highly prized white truffles (Tuber Magnatum Pico), other varieties too: autumn black truffle (Tuber Uncinatum Chatin), winter black truffle (Tuber Brumale Vitt, which is about half the price of the Tuber Melanosporum Vitt) and smooth black truffle (Tuber Macrosporum Vitt).

These change hands at dramatically different prices, and restaurants all too often just put “truffle” on the menu since many unsuspecting people will assume the costliest version or don't realise the difference in the varieties.

Stecca brings fresh, simple Italian food to Chelsea's Hollywood Road

Summing it all up: Stefano Stecca, formerly at Toto's, is keeping it simple in his latest project by using top grade ingredients to create traditional Italian cuisine, including Crudi - a raw fish dish made with freshly caught Cornish fish.

If you’re one of those Londoners who finds the summer temperatures particularly untenable, then make a note of Stecca, a new Italian place in Chelsea where the menu is full of light, simple dishes which looks perfect for a heatwave.

It’s being led by Stefano Stecca (previously at Toto's, Baglioni, Zafferano), who you may find preparing the fish for Crudi - an Italian raw fish dish - in the restaurant’s upstairs bar.

Keeping in line with the grand Italian tradition of high-quality ingredients, fish will be brought in from Cornwall every day, meat will aim to be organic and “zero km” (so as local as possible) and small producers will be hand picked by the chefs.

“I always try to create simple, traditional cuisine using fresh, seasonal food to enhance the flavours in my dishes,” said Stefano.

The latest addition is Stecca, an Italian restaurant serving regional and seasonal cuisine with a ‘light and contemporary touch’.

Chef/patron Stefano Stecca grew up in Rimini, a coastal town in Emilia Romagna which has a rich culinary heritage of pasta and fish.

A crisp, dry glass of Franciacorta Prestige, Ca del Bosco, Lombardia from the Italian and French focussed wine list  set us up very nicely for the upcoming dinner.

The offered glass of house red, a Novello, Marramiero, Abruzzo, 2017 was not great – it would be worth spending a bit more… From the Secondi menu came a dish of pan-fried cod with a lentil sauce infused with sage.

Stecca is the perfect neighbourhood Italian restaurant in Chelsea.
