The Hereford Arms, Gloucester Road - Roast Dinners In London

Review analysis
food   menu   drinks   staff

The Hereford Arms on Gloucester Road was the roast dinner choice.

It was a really tough choice between the chicken and beef, but as I had eaten out 3 times in the previous 2 days, I plumped for the plump cheaper cheep chicken.

I’m still yet to have a roast dinner served to me on a slate, deckchair, lego set or any of the “well cool” methods of east London, though I guess as I still haven’t had a roast east of King’s Cross, that will be the reason.

Thankfully one of my accomplices was so hungover that she couldn’t finish her beef (her: “that bit is the fat”, me: “yeah and…?”)

Had I had the beef, and were the gravy and roasties to the standard of the rest of the dinner, it would have scored close to a 9 – and I have never in my life had a roast dinner served to me that deserved a 9.

Choices, choices… Recently refurbished, and with art by Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin on the walls and elegant harlequin stained glass windows, green leather banquettes, wood, mirrors and kind lighting, it’s sort of a relief to know that glitzy celeb haunt The Ivy still offers a classic, nostalgic bangers and mash dish (£13.75) – double pork sausages, with colcannon mash and cider gravy.

If you’ve got a sausage and mash craving in the early hours, head to Polo Bar right by Liverpool Street station, where you’ll find Cumberland sausages, creamy mash and homemade red onion and ale gravy (£8) on their 24-hour menu.

You’ll find hearty Cumberland sausage with mash and onion gravy on the menu here – simple, honest food done well.

Their sausages and creamy mash are served with a red wine onion gravy, sugar snaps and green peas.

With branches in Bishopsgate, The City, Holborn and Canary Wharf, Rocket are celebrating British Sausage Week with a special ‘posh’ bangers and mash – finest bangers and creamy spring onion mash, served with crispy onion rings, sage, caramelized red onion relish, crispy pancetta, and cider and rosemary gravy.

The Farmers Club is a London Private Member's Club based at Whitehall Court.

The club was founded in 1842 by the agricultural writer William Shaw, who invited the founder members from the newly formed Royal Agricultural Society of England, and the Smithfield Club.

By April 1893 the club has secured rooms at the York Hotel in Bridge Street, Blackfriars.

After several further moves, the club settled on some rooms at 2 Whitehall Court, which it occupied between 1904 and 1942.

The rest of the block remains largely residential, and the club's former rooms now make up part of the Royal Horseguards Hotel, owned by Thistle Hotels.
