Bright and airy, with pictures of Lebanon lining the walls, Beirut Meza is a comfortable, casual spot for enjoying all of your favourite Lebanese eats.

The staff is incredibly friendly, and also very knowledgable about the menu items, so guests with food restrictions are welcome to ask for suggestions.

Beirut Meza on London’s Askew Road also offers several alcoholic beverages as well as fresh juices, soft drinks, or arak, the Lebanese national spirit, distilled.

Offering up an extensive menu of cold meze, warm meze, pastries, salads, mains and desserts, London’s Beirut Meza seems to have it all.

The restaurant does grilled specialties particularly well, and guests can decide from options like chicken kafta, farrouj meshwi (boneless baby chicken), or shish taouk (skewers of marinated chicken cubes), all cooked over charcoal.

menu   ambience

Head here after 7pm, though, and mottled lampshades scatter pretty patterns of light across a candlelit room that’s decorated in muted blues and greens, with ornate ceramic tiling.

The menu is helpfully split into prices for one, two or three courses; you can mix and match as you like and it’s great value.

Briks, doigts de fatma and cigares – all crisp little pastries, surprisingly light and delicately spiced, with meat, seafood or vegetarian fillings – are highlights among the starters.

Main courses include tagines and couscous, as well as a variety of grilled meats and fish.

The chefs hail from Morocco and Tunisia, and the subtlety of the aromatic dishes shows their homelands’ cuisines in their best light.

Glorious stews, spot-on kebabs and delightful dips distinguish this peach of a Persian venue.

It’s‬ hard to find a bad word to say about Sufi, a restaurant we’ve consistently praised since it opened in 2007.

Taftoon flatbread, baked in the clay oven by the front window, is the ideal accompaniment.

Kuku-ye sabzi (a frittata-like dish of parsley, coriander and dill mixed with eggs and baked) was almost as good.

The key to Persian lamb kebabs is the marinade – lots of turmeric, black pepper and garlic – and the‬ chelo koobideh‬ (minced lamb) was spot-on.
