Jayne & Larry: Hello… | Brackenbury Village

Review analysis
food

Hello… The Brackenbury Village asked me to write a regular column about the arts and what’s on at The Hepsibah Gallery but I found myself having sleepless nights about doing for Brackenbury what Hedda Hopper did for Hollywood – filling the pages with news, gossip and scandal!

It’s such a great area, with fab people and curious incidents and happenings to share….

so how about… ’What’s on in Fashion (What we are wearing in The Village?)’

, ‘Top Tips from Brackenbury’, ‘Celebs Spotted in the Village’, ‘Good News from Brackenbury’, ‘…as Seen on the Streets of Brackenbury (picture post)’, ‘The Bigger Picture’ (reviews of ‘What’s on and not to be missed in London’, for example the Sargent or how fab was Rubens)… …so engage with me – send me your tips, gossip, conversation, events, photos and opinions and I’ll follow your lead and I’ll show you Brackenbury the Village through your eyes.

I will be featuring an amazing array of artists and craftsmen who are coming to exhibit at the gallery including a group show of weavers, a sculptor in marble and stone, a jeweller, a landscape painter, an interior designer and lampmaker, a potter and a printer and more more more.

The Cowan Report: April 2012

The BBC is reporting that Hammersmith and Fulham Council “are considering” proposals to move at least “500 families from London to the East Midlands.”

This shamelessly ignores the fact that H&F Conservatives are demolishing 3,500 council homes and selling the land to property speculators; that they have fixed planning processes to block any new affordable rented homes and even appeared on the BBC’s Homes Under The Hammer selling off individual flats on the cheap to property speculators who were made to guarantee H&F Conservatives that they wouldn’t live in the homes – they would sell them on at a profit instead.

Front line housing officers tell me that they have moved people to Margate and have threatened to move other families to Reading - although, true to form, senior officials deny this.

The families being moved out are those in receipt of housing benefits (HB) and Local Housing Allowance (LHA).

Prior to that they refused to have any genuine review and over the last two years published a series of shoddy and unprofessional reports about the HB/LHA crisis that appeared to be designed deliberately to mislead - as you can read here here , and here I have written to Mr. Melborne Barrett , H&F Council’s Director of Housing and Regeneration, for a full and objective briefing about this.

Pastéis de nata - those delicious Portuguese custard tarts - can now be found, freshly baked in the centre of Hammersmith.Made to head chef Lucio's secret recipe, Café de Nata produce  a perfectly crisp flaky pastry and creamy smooth custard filling that will brighten your day and ruin your diet.Proprietor Diogo Esteves hopes to make the pastel de nada a popular treat in the UK - just as it is in Portugal and many other parts of the world. They are really delicious and go well with Café de Nata's excellent coffee.

Pastéis de nata were first baked at the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, Lisbon.

Three years later, after having purchased the monk's recipe, the Antiga Confeitaria de Belém took over.

In 2009, The Guardian was so taken with these delicacies, it urged people to visit Belém in an article titled: The 50 best things to eat in the world and where to eat them .

But as the Facebook reviews of Café de Nata say, you can save yourself the journey and enjoy perfectly fresh, warm pastéis de nada straight out of the oven in Hammersmith Broadway.

menu   food   ambience

The Brackenbury was, for a while during the 1990s, a proper dining destination noted for its innovative Italianate menu.

The original owners sold up and moved on a long time ago, but now, Ossie Gray (of the River Café) and two chefs with impressive track records are reviving its fortunes with a menu that pays homage to the original.

The Mediterranean-influenced menu features plenty of British produce (Aberdeen Angus, Gressingham duck, Keen’s cheddar) but draws in other, more Italian influences, such as beetroot with blood orange, or calf’s liver with polenta.

Eventually we settled on soused herring with potatoes, a pleasing dish lifted by its punchy horseradish sauce.

The steak frites with béarnaise was perfect – the highpoint of the meal.

The focus is on wine – it's a wine shop as well as a wine bar – but there's also a grown-up food menu, as well as good-looking bar plates.

Forty-eight wines are available by the glass, served via Enomatic wine dispensers.

Bar plates include English charcuterie and cheeses from Androuet.

The main food menu features dishes such as foie gras with quince jelly and toast, confit duck salad with watermelon, cashews and pomegranate, herb gnocchi with spring vegetables, parmesan and rocket, and onglet steak served with hand-cut chips.

Chai Naasto Hammersmith | Restaurants in Hammersmith, London

An Indian street food restaurant founded by three brothers, with the intention of sharing their Nanima's (gran's) recipes with the people of London.

The food menu comprises a selection of 'naasto' (snacks), including Punjabi curries, kebabs, samosas, salads and puri (filled deep-fried dough parcels), plus veggie, vegan and gluten-free options.
