Halal at Feast Canteen 'food hall' in Hammersmith - Feed the Lion

Review analysis

Feast Canteen in Hammersmith, west London, is only a taster of what’s to come, with a report by property advisers Cushman & Wakefield suggesting at least 16 new food halls are planned for the capital alone.

Feast Canteen has, however, come up with a novel way of addressing the problem of variety with a rotary system that will periodically introduce four new restaurants thereby offering visitors various cuisines all in one convenient space.

With two locations in Dalston and Finsbury Park, and founded in 2014, owner Colin Tu has reportedly said that he’s “truly excited at the prospect of serving ‘traditional, home-style Vietnamese food in a modern way’, something he felt was missing in London despite there being many good, established Vietnamese restaurants”.

With a dearth of Vietnamese restaurants that offer Halal, this is a rarity; and with Pho and Noodles on the menu, Feast Canteen is definitely worth a visit.

What’s more, from 19 Feb, Feast Canteen will be running a competition where one lucky winner will be chosen each week to ‘Eat For Free’ for a whole week.

'For the Love of God, Where's the Deliciousness?' Asks Critic Tim ...

In the meantime, another puzzler: should restaurant critics review places like Feast Canteen, more of a glorified food court than an actual cohesive capital-r Restaurant?

United Chip Question two this week (or three, whatever): should restaurant critics review places like United Chip?

Camp two, don’t be stupid, argues that every single restaurant a critic ever reviews may as well be a freebie for the effect it has on their bank balance — once you’re spending Other People’s Money, questions of value go out of the window entirely since the amount of skin in the game is dramatically decreased.

As (relatively) cheap and cheerful new openings like Pastaio and Rambla boom, Dent is probably correct to identify “Michelin-flirting whimsy” as one “chief casualty” of the current brutal climate; “as the restaurant world tightens its belt”, customers are more likely to want to unbuckle theirs after eating satisfying, simple, delicious food than they are to fiddle around with “nitpicky,” “puzzling plates.”

There’s a pleasing symmetry to Tim Hayward reviewing Londrino: for one thing, it was the final restaurant Dent covered at ES Magazine; for another, it seems the polar opposite of Sorella, offering exactly the sort of Michelin-courting fiddliness that Robin Gill and co have apparently abandoned.

Feast Canteen | A New Street Food Spot from the Pergola Team

It’s called Feast Canteen, and it’s settled into the former food court in Hammersmith’s Kings Mall.

It’s now a much slicker space, upgrading the canteen with their characteristic design touches like sleek brass kitchen fronts, verdant plants, and an exposed industrial ceiling – which we can only presume would have been a characteristic design feature, had any of their previous spots actually had rooves.

With room for around 350 people, it’s playing host to a rotating series of guest restaurants, who’ll plate up some of their most popular dishes to eat in, take away or even have delivered.

NOTE: Feast Canteen is open seven days a week – you can find out more right HERE.

The food court in the mall was previously unused so this is great news for the area, plus it’s filled with some of London’s top names.

Sure, you can grab a chicken taco here but why not try the char siu pork belly with puffed rice and sambal?

The pho noodle soup is your classic benchmark dish, although we recommend the crab and prawn spring rolls too.

Sinchow: Rice paper rolls are so easy to eat yet feel kind of healthy, which means they could be among the world’s most perfect foods.

This is street food so it’s not going to break the bank.

The pattern is familiar: the creation of a new restaurant, with initial growth more or less maintaining quality, followed by investors backing expansion, leading to the restaurants becoming travesties of themselves, soulless experiences, within just a few years.

A group called Incipio, created in 2014, is attempting this by creating sites that temporarily host a variety of new independent restaurants in funky, under-utilised and presumably low-cost locations.

The new food court opens up a big space in the centre of the building.

Patty & Bun’s Winger Winger Chicken Dinner (£6.50) was smoked, confit chicken pieces covered with an sticky, sweet and tangy barbecue sauce.

On Monday I went on to check out its first such venture, Feast Bar & Kitchen, a vast creation hosting two restaurants in White City Place.
