Tom Parker Bowles reviews Le Bab: Kebab that's fit for a king ...

Marco Pierre White, Pierre Koffmann, Gordon Ramsay, Rowley Leigh, Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti are just a handful of the be-toqued talent to pass through the exalted kitchens of Le Gavroche (opened in 1967) and The Waterside Inn (opened in 1972).

So you’d imagine a chef like Ed Brunet – having spent time slaving at the stoves of Le Gavroche, as well as other Michelin joints – would look onwards and upwards, to take his fiercely won mastery of duxelles, mirepoix and mise-en-place to some equally stellar establishment.

And not only did he want to devote his life to the doner, he took two Le Gavroche chefs with him too.

But Le Bab, sitting on the top floor of an upmarket food court just off Carnaby Street, is not your usual beer-goggled ‘duuurble doner, maaate and triple chilli sos’, rather a small, bright, partly tiled room with white walls (blissfully unblemished by bad art) and a ceiling that’s exposed for reasons I reckon are more budgetary than aesthetic.

Good meze and grilled fish but the stars are the kebabs, excellent shish in good fresh bread.
