Sufi – Persian Food in West London | Tamarind and Thyme

I’ll first write about Sufi, an excellent Persian restaurant in West London that I visited with Blai just before my trip.

I had been thinking about Persian food all week and when I learned of this budget restaurant (with great reviews) not too far from us, I took Blai there for dinner one night.

As they seemed very worried that we had not ordered any appetisers for the wait, they soon brought over some yogurt with sweet garlic with freshly baked flat nan bread, complimentary for the wait.

The warm flat bread, topped with sesame seeds, had been just baked in the oven by the window and the yogurt was a wonderful cold, creamy contrast.

The Sufi’s special for 2 consisted of one skewer of marinated chicken (joojeh kebab), one skewer of baby lamb fillet (kebab barg) and two skewers of minced lamb kebabs (kebab koobideh) served with grilled tomatoes and two plates of basmati rice, one for each of us.

The food and service in the place is very good much better than the ones we have been to so far!

Highly recommend this place

Glorious stews, spot-on kebabs and delightful dips distinguish this peach of a Persian venue.

It’s‬ hard to find a bad word to say about Sufi, a restaurant we’ve consistently praised since it opened in 2007.

Taftoon flatbread, baked in the clay oven by the front window, is the ideal accompaniment.

Kuku-ye sabzi (a frittata-like dish of parsley, coriander and dill mixed with eggs and baked) was almost as good.

The key to Persian lamb kebabs is the marinade – lots of turmeric, black pepper and garlic – and the‬ chelo koobideh‬ (minced lamb) was spot-on.

Sufi is a family-run Persian restaurant at the top end of Askew Road in West Shepherd's Bush.

It has been open since 2007, and since then has proven itself to be a friendly, well-run restaurant, serving appetising and inexpensive Iranian cuisine. For starters, the freshly baked flat bread is highly recommended; it is baked there and then in a traditional clay oven at the front of the restaurant, and is soft, seeded and extremely tasty.

Combine it with a range of dips or a mixed platter and your mouth will be watering for more, although try not to fill yourself up too much or you won't be able to enjoy your main.A popular choice for mains are the lamb or chicken skewers, which are cooked over a charcoal grill, and served with basmati rice.

On Saturdays and Sundays it is Baghali Polo ba Mahicheh (Lamb shanks and herbal rice).

The food is available to takeaway too.To reach the restaurant, the nearest tubes are Stamford Brook, Ravenscourt Park, or Shepherd's Bush, and there are also plenty of buses serving the area too.
