The Athenian | Souvlaki in London | Greek Street Food

We launched The Athenian at the end of 2014, as a small street food venture offering freshly made souvlaki prepared in the healthiest, most authentic way possible.

Ask any Greek and they will be sure to tell you that souvlaki is our nation’s favourite food to eat on the go.

A quick, healthier alternative to fast food, it consists of a pita wrap filled with grilled meat  - or cheese as a vegetarian alternative & mushrooms as a vegan one - and served in a way we love.

The name souvlaki comes from a medieval word, meaning ‘little skewer’, after the cooking method.

Four new food operators will open in a new development — White City Place — in west London.

Greek restaurant, the Athenian, New-York style pizza restaurant Pizza Street, grab-and-go Italian Coco di Mama and American bakery Butterscotch will all occupy space in the West Works building.

Coco di Mama, Italian grab-and-go, will open in October at White City Place.

Layered cakes, peanut butter brownies, white chocolate blondies, cheesecakes, fruity marshmallows and cupcakes are all inspired by Vo’s upbringing in Washington D.C. Butterscotch will run a stall at White City Place market from September 13th as a teaser for the opening later in the year.

David Camp, Stanhope’s chief executive said: “The arrival of these four brilliant retailers demonstrates the dynamic and exciting food and beverage offer at White City Place.

We are Tim and Neo and we have a Greek street food business called The Athenian.

Starting with a characteristic round and soft flatbread, it is then filled with a choice of tender chicken, juicy pork or handmade grilled halloumi cheese (vegetarian option), topped with freshly cut salad medley of lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, parsley and a choice of our delicious homemade sauces, be it spicy feta cheese, tzatziki or our signature yoghurt, mustard, honey and secret herbs sauce.

Our mission is to bring a small piece of Athens to London, and create an updated and modern image about Greek food.

Other than being a favourite and a classic, it’s a song about learning and evolving and our brand has done both since we started flying with our little owl in this universe of Greek food!

Souvlaki, salads, Greek produce of exceptional quality and exciting new additions to our menu!

In a nutshell: Greek gyros, salads and more Summing it all up: The Athenian heads west for its latest base in the shiny new White City development, which will be treated to several brand new menu items including a very interesting burger… Gyros (aka the Greek version of a kebab) is getting the burger treatment with The Athenian's latest opening in White City.

The Gyros Burger will be one of several new dishes for White City, alongside new courgette fritters, tomato croquettes and cheese croquettes.

The Athenian is one of the four new restaurants the White City development is getting, alongside the Butterscotch Bakery and Pizza Street.

I'll never forget how, in full view of the Parthenon, the streets filled not with civil unrest but with men and women who defied warnings of blood to savour fresh dollops of tzatziki in the sun.

It is also an early contender for Dish of the Year 2015: a medley of salty, stringy, succulent melted cheese with sweet, rich and nutty accompaniments.

The slow-cooked chickpeas with tzatziki are a sloppy riot of garlic-infused Mediterranean goodness, healthy if dear at £6; and for the more adventurous there are masterfully crafted lamb tongues with oregano potatoes and htipiti (red pepper and feta spread (£6), and rabbit with parsnip skordalia – a kind of potato and garlic purée (also £6).

The Athenian | Restaurants in Elephant and Castle, London

Trendy stall in Elephant and Castle’s equivalent of Boxpark, selling Greek souvlakia.

And thanks to this new Greek mini-chain, you can now snaffle them up like you’re holidaying in Athens.

The stall in Elephant and Castle’s answer to Boxpark – yes, there is such a thing, get over it – has a clean white-tiled interior peppered with Greek paraphernalia (bunches of Hellenic mountain herbs sitting in containers, forks in tin cans strewn with Greek writing).

Wraps are made with the vastly superior Greek rather than Cypriot pitta (circular rather than oval, fluffy rather than unleavened) and come with a sprinkling of oregano-flecked chips inside, plus a choice of tzatziki, tyrokafteri (spicy feta dip) or creamy souvlaki sauce.

At that price, even members of the Greek government could afford lunch there.
