Directly outside the hotel are the buses 9, 10 and 27, each taking a scenic route to Central London’s famous sites, as well as Kensington Palace, Harrods and Notting Hill Gate.

The building was originally St. Pauls School and was designed by Alfred Waterhouse in 1884, the architect of the Natural History Museum.

Each room is unique and encompasses the original character of building with some rooms having the original fire place.

The hotel was also the setting of the 1971 film “Melody”, an international cult film about youth and lost love.

Meal for two, including drinks and service: £70- £100 It is anthem night at the Straight and Narrow in Limehouse, and the piano player is working his way through Dancing Queen, Wuthering Heights and Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of The Heart.

As a piano player, I am lucky enough never to have had to earn a crust playing to a disinterested restaurant; to the muffled chatter of the mating game, while rolling from one tune to the next.

The restaurant is on the other side, on the raised ground floor of a much more modern development.

The Straight and Narrow is the neighbourhood restaurant you want around the corner; the one which will leave you feeling someone gave a damn about you having a good time without trying to extract a down payment on the Greek debt.

There's a traditional, classic look to this restaurant at the St Paul's Hotel in Hammersmith - the kind of look of which fastidious old schoolmasters might approve.

That could come in handy, given the hotel is located in a former school, one designed by the architect of the National History Museum, no less.

It was also where Eisenhower, Montgomery and Churchill met to plan the D-Day landings.

Thankfully Pol Roger Cuvee Winston Churchill features on the wine list, alongside a selection of wines leaning slightly on the old world.
