The Original Smokehouse

The Original Smokehouse

SMOKEHOUSE

The Smokehouse is a modern smoke house eatery, serving ‘low n slow’ BBQ smoked meats smothered with our chef’s special BBQ rubs.

Country style sides, generously filled pulled meat sandwiches and lip-smacking starters will complement the main event.

The menu is focused on Southern Style American comfort food with a twist!

Stacked up with (*breathes in*) BBQ brisket, spitfire bacon, pork ribs, beef back ribs, chipotle-rub free range chicken, smoked chorizo, BBQ beans, corn on the cob, pickles, fries and cornbread, it’s aimed at 2-3 people.

Slathered in sticky, gooey BBQ sauce, the meat fell off the bone perfectly – and made quite the mess of my face and fingers… The chicken, while still tasty, wasn’t quite up to the level of the brisket and ribs – but only because they were so damn good.

The Original Smokehouse has a limited selection, and we chose the Peanut Cheesecake Brownie (£6) and Sticky Toffee Pudding (£4).

Surprisingly, as I’m not normally a sticky toffee kinda gal, this was the dessert I was most enamoured with – rich and warming, and a perfect mouthful with a little bit of white chocolate ice cream.

There were a few aspects, such as the aforementioned Salt and Pepper Squid and the Peanut Cheesecake Brownie, that were sadly unremarkable – but when Original Smokehouse gets it right, it really does get it right.

Only a few steps from this writer's flat, the original Smokehouse has been a huge hit and part of a group of restaurants that has been bringing quality back to the Islington food scene.

Now, after launching Bad Egg in the City, Neil Rankin and Noble Inns have set sights on Chiswick as the first place for a new Smokehouse.

The menu will again be set up by Neil Rankin and there will, of course, be an emphasis on smoking and barbeque.

On the menu, new dishes and favourites from Islington: Plus there will, of course, be Sunday lunch with pork rib eye & smoked shoulder with all the trimmings and crown roasted Chicken for two to share (plus more).

There, they'll have a menu with more than 100 varieties - from Scottish and Japanese Whisky to Whiskey from America and Ireland.

A second outpost of the popular Smokehouse in Islington, this one with a bar featuring a vast selection of whiskies.

The added extra is a huge whisky list – 92 counts when we visited, with 130 the target.

While prices aren’t cheap, they’re much lower than at other temples of whisky worship, like the bar at Mayfair’s Athenaeum Hotel.

The dark wood interiors and wall-mounted antlers give Smokehouse’s three distinct areas – dining room, bar and ‘whisky room’ – a country-house feel.

On a late-afternoon weekend visit, the bar was filled with a happy, affluent, generation-spanning crowd.
