At the age of 16, Chef Zhang completed his formative training at the famous Hibiscus Restaurant in Chengdu and worked as a head chef in various establishments in Beijing and Shanghai before coming to London.

Chef Zhang was acknowledged for his outstanding achievements by being chosen to represent the UK as a guest chef to showcase the gold standard of Sichuan cuisine at the 2011 Worlds of Flavour, organised by the Culinary Institute of America in California, USA.In the same year, he was invited by Fuchsia Dunlop to help prepare her cooking book, ‘Every Grain of Rice: Simple Chinese Home Cooking’, which was published in 2012.

Jen of Dashi Dashi organised a Saturday lunch meetup last weekend and we, Luiz of The London Foodie and his Dr G, and May of Slow Food Kitchen gathered to try her local Sichuan restaurant, Tian Fu, in Shepherd’s Bush.

I have to admit that I did feel like I was cheating a bit on my local Sichuan restaurant by heading to another relatively local one.

First to arrive were the dry fried green beans (£6.80) which came in a massive pile and were fried till tender with pork and minced pickled vegetables.

Cumin lamb (£8.50) while not Sichuan but rather from Xinjiang, was exactly as I remember in the Muslim Restaurant in Beijing: tender slices of lamb fried with lots of cumin and onion.

With jasmine tea and white rice for everyone (surely it’s impossible to eat Sichuan food without white rice), and service, the total came to £72.20.

Staff friendly and efficient and great food experience.

The service was great and the food was really good and has a variety of dishes, would be nicer if they had more beef and chicken dishes.

The Tian Fu Boilled fish is amazing and they also do authentic Sichuan hot pots which are great for sharing.

A great place to eat good hearty food, I cannot recommend it enough.

The hot pot all-you-can-eat buffet at Tian Fu is great, I love it, I have been there quite a few times already.

There’s no shortage of budget chop suey joints in Shepherd’s Bush, but to find a proper Chinese restaurant serving more than the usual takeaway food is a challenge.

Hidden around a corner off Uxbridge Road, a short walk from Shepherd’s Bush Market tube station, this unassuming Sichuan venue is easy to miss.

Crowds, mostly of mainland Chinese diners, fill its spacious interior in the evening, when a cosy atmosphere is produced by dark wooden furniture and the fragrance of sichuan peppercorns.

The signature dish (which most diners choose) is the classic Sichuan tongue-numbing mala hotpot buffet.

There’s also a lengthy à la carte, mainly of south-western Chinese dishes, with a small dim sum selection.
