Toro Gordo: Stylish Tapas for Hammersmith

Dishes I especially loved included the croquettes (which were made with prawn and spinach on the day I visited) and the Pulp al Toro (sliced octopus on a bed of house guacamole, £7.5).

Signature dish Tataki de Atun (marinated tuna served with tobiko roe, wasabi mayonnaise and sprouts, £8) was a treat as well while the nicely priced house tortilla (£3.50) could have been proudly served by any ama de casa.

Toro Gordo is located at 121 King Street, W6 9JG.

New Restaurant Review: Toro Gordo | Londonist

Toro Gordo isn’t a slice of the quaint flamenco-drenched Spain you get in many tapas restaurants around town, but rather a chunky slab of the stylish, urbane Spain that you might find on a Barcelona backstreet.

Matching the setting, Toro Gordo’s food offering is cosmopolitan rather than clichéd.

They’re well executed and sturdy stand-alones, but when the table’s varying tastes begin to mingle — as they invariably do with tapas — the flavours jar.

Still, being a tad over-experimental on a couple of dishes in the early days of a restaurant’s life is something we’re happy to let slide.

It might not be a fortified fan, but Toro Gordo is keen to showcase a blinding selection of rosé wines.

Iberico presa, that cut of pork between shoulder and loin with the sort of marbling that bears comparison to wagyu beef, does, however, fulfil most of its promise, although the mess of roasted peppers befuddles the impact.

One of my companions, Adam Coghlan YBF (Young British Foodie), delights me by describing the flavour of red peppers as being sometimes “amateur”.

Roasted to sweetness, though, they have a positive impact on tortilla patatas, where, as Adam notes, the key thing is that egg and potato should be assimilated and here they are.

Best from the Pescado Marisco and Carnes sections are gambas pil pil, in which the sauce for the prawns seems to be deeply infused with smoked garlic; pulpo al toro, moody sliced octopus on house guacamole; huevos rotos con foie, a paso doble of flavours and textures, the different softnesses of fried egg and sautéed duck liver accentuated by a smattering-scattering of straw potatoes.

A Spanish restaurant and cocktail bar in Hammersmith.

The food menu here is proudly Spanish, but the drinks range from Iberian-inflected cocktails and mixers to those with an Asian bent.

It's all served to a soundtrack of crowd-pleasing tracks and slices of the Spanish sun.

Tapas plays a prominent part on the food menu, with dishes such as Andalucian spicy lamb, chicken with red harissa, grilled Iberico pork and pato - a dish of sliced duck breast with pisto and wholegrain mustard.

Iberico meat platters are also available, alongside salads, sides and five desserts - including churros.
