Snooty Fox in Canonbury, London Pub Review and Details

Review analysis
food

The Snooty Fox is a loungey pub that's (mostly - see below) just got better as time has gone on and is obviously a hit with the locals.

It's easy to lump this one in with a lot of other places trying maybe too hard nearby, but there is something about the Snooty Fox - a freshness and originality to the place, that sets it apart.

Perhaps it's in part due to the pub's old fashioned vinyl jukebox: there're not many of these left in London - you can cram a lot more MP3s into a cabinet than 7" vinyl discs.

Service can sometimes be a bit haphazard and you can end up waiting for quite a time for a drink, it's not rude though, just feckless, and quite a few drinks were off last time we were in and for that the 'Fox gets marked.

The Snooty Fox is still one we be come back to.

A few yards from Canonbury Overground station crouches the Snooty Fox, a pub that urges you to relax as soon as you enter.

Not just relax, in fact — something about the open blinds on the windows and the beige interior make the Snooty Fox almost soporific, which is no bad thing if you're content to slump into one of its battered sofas for an afternoon of leisurely ales.

The wine list aims more for quality than quantity, but it is a pub well known for good food from its open kitchen.

An antique sign proclaims they serve Whitstable Bay oysters, though they weren't on the menu during our visit so in the unlikely event you're planning to visit a pub specifically for its edible molluscs, you may want to call ahead.

The Snooty Fox is famed for its vinyl jukebox, with a small but lovingly chosen selection of rock and roll classics.

A CAMRA-approved pub serving a fine range of ales and contemporary pub food, including Sunday roasts.

The food menu focuses on updates of British classics, so expect dishes such as rotisserie-cooked chicken alongside a weekly selection of home smoked meats, including cured English pork belly, racks of barbecue baby back ribs, slow-cooked brisket and smoked wild boar and apple sausages.

The CAMRA approval ensures there's a good range of real ales and craft beers regularly on tap, complemented by whiskies from Scotland, Ireland, Japan and the USA, and a short wine list with ten available by the glass.
