Hook is fronted by two affable Dubliners, who set up a fish and chip stall after their careers were clobbered by the 2008 financial crisis.

Essentially there are two types of mains: crispy panko breadcrumb-crusted fish and chips for a tenner, or tempura battered specimens for £12.

Our formidable spread (clockwise from top left): wasabi seabass, chorizo-stuffed squid, cajun-spiced gurnard and veg sidesWe plump for Cajun-spiced panko red gurnard, a meaty sausage of a fish that arrives squatting over a bottomless mound of chunky chips.

Deeply earth mushy peas: refreshing with perfectly-fried catch of the daySides of pleasantly salty chorizo-stuffed squid, plus curried cod cheeks with a cumin and lime dipping sauce complete a formidable spread of golden, deep-fried items cast across the table.

While the hip design casts a nod to other piscine openings, such as Dartmouth Park’s Lure Fish Kitchen (reviewed here), the attraction is simply traditional fish and chips given a global twist, rather than anything more experimental.

Love visiting Hook in Camden for lunch with colleagues; the fresh take on fish & chips is always well received - with an exciting choice of coatings (Cajun-spiced, Jamaican crispy panko, lemon and basil tempura) and selection of fish (coley, sea bream, cod, mackerel - selection changes daily), and also some chicken options, there's something to interest everyone's tastebuds.

Amazing food- Perfect crispy batter, yummy sauces and chips spot on!

also nice as a bit different from the usual fish and chips.

The chips are more like potato wedges which I found quite greasy.

Unfortunately, customers coming on going were in general incapable to close the door, which with the cold weather outside made an unpleasant cold air creep in everytime until I got up an closed it again.

ES Lifestyle Newsletter Hook Camden Town lunch box: a smoked salmon, potato and fennel salad So I’ll admit to being a little bit biased about this week’s lunch box.

This week’s lunch box is inspired by Hook’s sustainable approach to proper fish and chips.

For our lunch box-friendly version we’re having a smoked salmon, potato and fennel salad, with a lemon dressing and sauté spinach.

lemon juice 2 tbsp olive oil Small handful fresh dill 50g good quality smoked salmon Sea salt, black pepper to season Equipment Saucepan Knife Mandolin Frying pan         Cost to make per portion:  £3.80 Preparation and cooking time: 15 minutes How to make it: Boil the new potatoes in a saucepan of boiling salted water for approximately 15 minutes until soft (when you can easily put a knife through them, but they should not be falling apart).

Assemble the salad with the potatoes, fennel, spinach and good quality smoked salmon and drizzle with the lemon dressing.

And, as on any seaside visit, you’ll be eating fish and chips.

But not just any old fish and chips.

Forget about slabs of grey flesh in thick, greasy body bags of batter.

Think instead sea bass in a lime, mint and wasabi batter, applied sparingly; think Cajun spiced hake; think cod in a ‘classic’ batter made of panko – Japanese breadcrumbs.

Hook gets some of its fish from Cornish day boats; catches vary day by day.
