“Of course, we got the rum punch,” our slick waiter said with a twinkle in his eye as he handed us the drinks menu.

I half expected a guy with dreads and a box of pastries to walk in announcing, “BANANNA BREAD, CINAMON BUN, FRESHLY BAKED, AND THEY’RE HAAAAAAWT!”

“We’ve got all the Jamaican classics: curry goat, jerk chicken, steamed fish, oxtail stew.

Rupert opted for the jerk chicken skewers to start followed by a portion of curry goat and I ordered some ackee and saltfish dumplings followed by the oxtail stew.

Ma Petite Jamaica bills itself as a buzzing reggae bar capable of bringing the Caribbean sunshine to Camden.

The menu has staple dishes like jerk pit meats and curried goat.Starters are huge - ackee and saltfish comes with two piping hot dumplings, and there’s a very rich chick pea and pumpkin curry, with a large serving of roti.Escovitch is tongue-tinglingy spicy, a Jamaican classic made with fried snapper.

The menu doesn’t tell you this, so if you’re a novice to chillis food this is helpful to know.

It comes with grilled carrots, onions and peppers, as well as fried cassava. The jerk pork comes in two sizes, we go for the bigger 250g serving.

It’s a bit tough unfortunately, and also has fried plantain, a large helping of rice and peas, and a pot of very creamy coleslaw.

We also get a tasty side dish of onion and callaloo, which is the Caribbean equivalent of spinach. The food is ok, however faces serious competition given that Camden has really upped its game in terms of food recently.

I gave a 5 out of 6 rating because am a pescatarian and was given the wrong meal (instead of fish, pork was placed in front of me), I was skeptical and asked if it was fish, because everything jerk seemed to be cooked and have the same sauce poured over it.

if the staff can't tell the difference between jerk fish and pork how am I suppose to.

My Freind however, had an excellent time and enjoyed her jerk pork meal.

Staff were very polite even on this one of the busiest evenings of the year, food was excellent and in just the right portions.

Great drinks and lovely food and decent prices.

When ordering food, don’t mistake ‘small plates’ for starters: one is definitely enough to share, and friendly waiters are on hand to help navigate the menu.

Our dumplings filled with jerk chicken were moreish, but the salt fish fritters were heavy and underseasoned.

A main of fiery jerk chicken was moist and tender, smothered in hot sauce and served with rice and peas; while a side of coleslaw soothed the aggressive heat of the chicken.

Average piña coladas were icy and the Killer Doppi (four types of rum, apricot liqueur, blue Curaçao and fruit juices) was choked with orange juice and so felt overpriced, especially when compared with the food.

The odd let-down aside, Ma Petite Jamaica is a great-value, fun destination for lining your stomach and kicking off a night in Camden.
