Well, head to Oli Baba’s in Camden Market for some halloumi fries and find out for yourself.

Oli Baba’s are the original creators of halloumi fries.

For anyone who hasn’t tried halloumi before, imagine a hard, salty cheese that instead of melting when warm becomes soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.

On this busy stall in Camden Market, they cut the cheese into ‘fries’ and deep fry them until golden brown… … and finish off with chilli flakes and pomegranate seeds.

There cheesy, crispy and chewy; and if the fries themselves weren’t amazing enough, the yoghurt, syrup and mint on top mean there salty and sweet all at the same time.

Oh, and now a menu based entirely around a single cheese.

There’s a lot of halloumi on this menu, guys.

You can also have the halloumi crumbed, but will the results be as good as the halloumi fries at Oli Baba’s, who make some of London’s best street food?

Chad Canning, who formerly worked at Ottolenghi’s Nopi, has come up with two Cypriot-inspired cocktails for the pop up and, reassuringly, neither of them contain halloumi.

Diners will either leave in love with halloumi or put off the stuff for life.

Oli Baba's Halloumi Fries in Camden Market

Because a photo speaks a thousand words after all… I have seen the future and the future is made of halloumi fries.

After our spendy shopping trip to The Blogger’s Market on Saturday, Charlie and I set off towards Camden Market.

I’ve been to a couple of the proper restaurants in Camden market (this one and this one) but somehow I always prefer the street food stalls at KERB.

Oli Baba’s halloumi fries are crunchy sticks of golden cheesy goodness, drizzled with natural yoghurt, and pomegranate syrup, then sprinkled with sumac, coriander, pomegranate seeds, and chilli flakes.

Oh and a quick head’s up: there are a LOT of people in Camden on a Saturday, so I suggest buying your food and then running away from everyone.

Deep-fried cheese, though obviously not a diet food, must be one of life’s great pleasures.

Oli Baba is officially everybody’s best friend, since he’s devoted his life (well, his Camden stall at least) to frying fingers of halloumi cheese until they’re crispy on the outside and squidgy in the middle.

They’re not one of your five-a-day, they’re not  going to blow your tastebuds apart, but they are deep-fried cheese.
