WEST THIRTY SIX - WESTBOURNE PARK

Naturally, I followed the usual steps, find a suitable date (a Sunday which succeeded an empty Saturday night was the obvious winner) and then checked CityMapper for directions… 70 minutes.

And like the others in the family of restaurant bars, focuses on modern British grilled food, cocktails, a chilled vibe and a young and affluent clientele.

The décor seems to lend it self to the aforementioned matriarchal ‘eccentric Soho bar’ that is responsible for much of the design.

Ornaments, and trinkets are scattered around the room, telling the story of faux travels; mini table-lamps, reminiscent of French Bistros, provide lighting for diners; and EVERY seat in the house looks comfortable – with a choice between leather chesterfields or banquette seating (nothing worse than wondering why you weren’t sat in the comfy seats over ‘there’).

The Roast Rib-of-Beef (£18.40) continues in WTS’s generous form with a mountainous stack of veggies, a Yorkshire pud big enough to bath a baby in, and meat portions enough to host your own Sunday Lunch party.

Big Easy, Chelsea - London Dates : Social Concierge

We now look to Big Easy – an American BBQ joint and crabshack on the Kings Road – as a place where frozen margaritas can be downed and food challenges undertaken, all the while scoffing to each other knowingly about the crassness of American culture.

Many the romantic evening has been passed here, poking fun, drinking lots, reeling from the steal of the unlimited fajita deal, tapping away to country music and really letting go.

Plus there’s nothing like a fun challenge on a date.

The crucial point here is that the food challenge part of this was all for show, just have a bit to eat, a lot to drink and shimmy away to the crappy music.

Providing you don’t overdo it this place puts you at ease and sets things up for a fun and tactile night, with a frat party ending.

Bluebird Café, Chelsea - London Dates : Social Concierge

The Bluebird Café is a true Chelsea institution, a fairly posh joint originally owned by Sir Terrance Conran, tastemaker of the upper middle classes and thinking woman’s crumpet.

It is a great date location for a number of reasons.

Secondly, because of it’s multifarious offerings: there’s a pricey restaurant, a chilled café, a bakery, a fine foods shop, a bar and a courtyard.

Sidestepping the formality of the restaurant itself, head to the Courtyard on a sunny Saturday for a relaxed date.

The lunch menu is not an adventurous one, just café classics like Caesar Salad, Croque Monsieur, Seafood Linguini and posh paninis.

We returned to the Big Easy Covent Garden after 6 years away and it has sadly gone downhill in that time.

The menu is expensive in comparison to other equivalent eateries and the steak I was served (700g Rib Eye) was flat and poorly cooked, cold and with a lot of charring.

The lobster and the Apple Betty are by far the tastiest dishes on the menu but the restaurant has fallen a long way since the days of a 28oz Sirloin on the Bone served hot.

Both the wife and I agreed, there are far too many new places in London to warrant a return visit for an overpriced, poorly cooked steak.

Despite the booking information being taken down, at no point did the restaurant do anything with that information.
