food

This family owned Mediterranean café, bistro and deli opened in 2008 and has fast become a favourite with Chelsea and South Kensington locals who treat it as a home from home.

Jak's is a father-and-son enterprise inspired by fresh, local produce, healthy eating and all the delicious flavours of the Mediterranean.

There are a range of exotic salad and vegetable dishes, including tzatziki, tabbouleh, while the generously portioned mains include delicious classics such as organic beef or vegetable lasagne, chicken pie, broccoli cauliflower cheese soufflé, stuffed aubergine, moussaka, as well as a range of simple meat and fish dishes.

Jak's home-made cakes, fresh fruit salads and scrummy desserts (including a delightful tiramisu) would put a smile on any Nonna's face.

Of course, you can just enjoy the homely décor in the company of a coffee - but you'll find it hard not to resist staying longer to see if the food whizzing past tastes as good as it smells.

Snack on bar nibbles or order from the reasonably priced pan-Asian restaurant menu, which combines Thai, Chinese and Malaysian dishes.

Eat in or take away at this smart café and delicatessen, open all day in the heart of the West End, where you will find pastries, puddings and a superb selection of teas, coffees, sandwiches, salads and speciality cakes.

Delicious Italian breads, soups, salads, ice cream-filled brioche and other regional specialities are on the menu at this traditional Sicilian eatery, open all day, where everything is freshly made on site.

Lounge around at The Lonsdale Tucked away on a quiet street behind Westbourne Grove, The Lonsdale is a stylish, newly refurbished lounge, restaurant and bar where you can enjoy small pan-Asian taster dishes with exotic cocktails.

Stop for dim sum and other Chinese specialities in the über-chic downstairs restaurant or opt for exotic aromatic teas and pastries in the upstairs tea room.

Unlike other shopping areas like Covent Garden or the dreadful Oxford St where the choice of food outlets is mind-boggling, I always felt rather stuck around Knightsbridge.

As we ate our salads, we noticed a constant queue of people ordering food, and the freshly prepared bowls of salad, cakes and other platters being brought out from the café’s busy kitchen.

One of the strong impressions I gained from Jak’s was the proprietor’s passion for what he does and his commitment to serving food that is healthy, very fresh and delicious.

I am glad that I went to Jak’s Cafe on Walton Street, and to have found a real gem of a place in Knightsbridge’s busy shopping area – I will certainly be going back to Jak’s whenever heading that way.

Verdict – Excellent, fresh food in the heart of the busy, exclusive shopping area of Knightsbridge, at non-exclusive prices.
