The Builders Arms - Fuller's Pub and Restaurant in Croydon

A traditional local, the Builder’s Arms serves up a warm, friendly welcome with great food and beer to boot.

Built in the 19th century this traditional pub offers a relaxed atmosphere, the perfect place for a quiet pint, and on a Sunday it's the best pub in Croydon for a roast!

For ‘The Ayes’, they make “a great local addition” providing “great British food in a buzzy setting” (“I keep expecting to be disappointed, and I’m not!”)

For ‘The Nays’, “hugely underwhelming food” and “uneven” standards generally make it “feel like they are trying to milk the franchise, but are destroying it in the process”.

The most popular is the “ladies-who-lunch” favourite on the King’s Road, whose “garden is to die for” (although “it’s an uphill struggle actually being seated in it”) – a “super, bustling and tastefully decorated venue with fabulous people watching opportunities” (and where the Top Tip is “its great breakfast: it’s much quieter so service is spot on!)”

Whilst it was 715pm on a Friday evening, there was space at a good number of the mostly larger tables (there were a few for couples but the majority of people appeared to be in groups of three or more) yet it was busy enough to feel like you were not alone.

Actually, I shouldn’t have worried as people were so busy enjoying themselves that I felt right at home immediately.Feeling safe in the irregularly shaped restaurant area – but with groups of office guys and a couple of couples nearby, and numerous chatty groups a around the corner – I took in the environment.

There was one of those area divider things containing a selection of books, unusual ornaments and neon ice buckets.I felt I deserved a glass of something comforting and ordered up a Languedoc Chardonnay (£4.60 for a small glass) and some tap water to recover from my recent sprint along the King’s Road while I tackled the extensive wine list.

Why isn’t there ever enough bread? The main courses covered pan fried sea bass (£14), roast rump of new season lamb (£15.50), rib eye steak (£16.50), chicken ceasar salad with poached egg and bacon (£12.50) and tomato tart tartin with goat’s cheese £10).

OK, the fish and peas could have been better but for ambience, clientele, friendly service, value for money and that incredible wine list you’d be hard pressed to beat it.

food

When we did order there were numerous things not available.

At about 9.30 the food arrived; 3 steaks and a chicken pie.

We received numerous apologies throughout including an offer of free food which we accepted.

The restaurant had plainly had a party for 30 earlier in the evening and never recovered but it wasnt just the slowness, or the dishes that were running out around us, it was the confusion, the wrong food arriving, the fact that ordered bread never arrived BUT was so disappointing was that having waited 90 minutes for one course that it was badly cooked and cold.

Plainly we shan’t be returning to the Builders but to be honest I can’t see why we would ever go to another pub in the group, which is a pity as over the years I have used many, often.
