Le Hanoi Restaurant | Macclesfield Street | Chinatown London

Good things come to those who wait and at Le Hanoi on Macclesfield Street, their pho broth is lovingly simmered for 16 hours to achieve perfection.

Pretty much Vietnam’s signature dish, pho soup is fast becoming one of the UK’s favourite comfort eats too, thanks to the warming, fragrant broth, slurp-worthy rice noodles and tasty meats.

Serving up 10 types of pho, Le Hanoi is a must-visit destination for any pho-fiend.

With over 30 years experience, it’s safe to say their head chef is something of a pho pro.

With bare-brick walls, quirky pendant lighting and a giant Vietnamese flag gold star motif, Le Hanoi’s vibe is fun and funky attracting a young crowd both during the day for lunch (don’t miss their set menu lunch offer) and after dark too.

Bun ho hue – Spicy beef with Old Imperial Hue beef broth with lemongrass and shrimp paste Combo Pho – Fatty flank, steak, brisket, tripe, beef balls in homemade beef broth Le Hanoi recently opened a few months ago in Chinatown, so I was curious to see if this new eatery had the power to lure me away from Pho Mile in East London.

I went for the Bun ho hue – Spicy beef with Old Imperial Hue beef broth with lemongrass and shrimp paste.

This was a healing experience, the soup was just the right balance of spice and gentle hum of the lemongrass & shrimp paste amplified the richness of the beef pho.

Mike went for the Combo Pho – Fatty flank, steak, brisket, tripe, beef balls in homemade beef broth.

Mine was better 😛 For the side we went for Banh Cuon – Steamed rice rolls filled with pork, mushrooms served with fried shallots, & Banh Xeo – Vietnamese pancake filled with chicken, prawns & beansprouts.

Buns are available with several types of fillings, and even though it’s not in the name, handmade dumplings are on the menu, too.

Other types of dumplings are available as well, such as the crescent-shaped jiaozi, alongside dim sum, chow mein and several more classic Chinese dishes.

Sichuan is a province in China known for spicy food, making use of peppers and ginger – this is the home of the original Kung Pao Chicken.

The menu covers a range of traditional dishes, including Nasi Lemak (coconut rice with curried chicken) and Singapore Black Pepper Crab.

Rasa Sayang is also the only place in Chinatown, to our knowledge, where you can find Kueh Pie Tee, a kind of savoury tart filled with chicken and shrimp.

Le Hanoi, a Vietnamese restaurant on the edge of Chinatown, could change that.

There are geometric tiles, brightly coloured walls and clear plastic seating.

There’s a big yellow LED star on the wall and a tropical house playlist.

Also excellent were dense, moreish pork dumplings wrapped in crispy betel leaves and a rich, tender dish of grilled marinated duck.

The mango salad: a mix of sweet fruit, chilli, crispy shrimp and buttery peanuts.
