Last week, we went for a steak dinner at Arlo’s in Balham, and found out that it wasn’t just us who loved the food there… Yep.

We had a voucher to cover some of the meal cost, so to get the best deal we chose the Bavette Steak to share (£45 for 500g + sides + 2 sauces).

Bavette steak comes from the flank (side), and is a lean cut – meaning lots of flavour.

As well as dinner, Arlo’s also has a brunch menu which branches out a little more beyond the traditional steak and chips, still incorporating the steak they’re known for.

At heart, the restaurant really puts its focus into one thing – steak, in case you missed that part – and it does it very well indeed.

Arlo's, Balham, London: restaurant review

Owner Tom McNeile led a colourful life before opening his first restaurant, Arlo’s, a neighbourhood steak place just off Balham’s buzzing high street.

Arlo’s has a pared-back, casual feel – whitewashed brick walls hand-painted with a huge ‘A’, simple furnishings and an open kitchen.

The menu is simple, with just three ‘butcher’s cuts’ offered; bavette, seven bone and deckle, alongside a selection of sauces and sides.

All steaks here are first cooked sous-vide then finished on the grill to get that all-important char.

This casual joint is delivering great-quality steaks at a fraction of the price of some competitors – a great addition to the neighbourhood.

Arlo’s is also chipping away at the exclusivity of decent steak in London.

Like Beef and Brew in Kentish Town, it’s forgone high-end cuts with high-end prices – fillet, sirloin and ribeye – in favour of bavette, seven bone and dry-aged deckle.

I kid you not – drinking the same wine, an Argentinian Malbec.

No matter how expensive, or how well-cooked, good steak is a simple dish, a slab of comfort, fuel in its finest form, something to cheerily chew on and wash back with red wine – in short, exactly what Arlo’s offers.

A Balham steak specialist on the site once home to Tartine.

It may be ‘serious about steak’ (their words) but don’t come to Arlo’s expecting a classic US-style steakhouse, all dark and sultry.

As for the ‘sharing’ rib-eye, this may have been both full-flavoured and tender, but even with two freebie sauces and a portion of garlic-bread-of-sorts thrown in, the £55 price tag is hard to swallow.

It easily serves two, but to make it stretch to three you’d need plenty of sides, something Arlo’s isn’t strong on.

Arlo’s may not be perfect, but if you order carefully, you can still get a decent steak, salad and pud for £21.
