Natural selection: buffet brunch at the Walkie Talkie's Darwin Brasserie

It’s hardly surprising; London is a blisteringly expensive place for a family day out and entrance to the Sky Garden is free (though you can’t just roll up; spaces must be booked in advance).

It does mean that anyone looking for a relaxing and/or romantic meal needs to upgrade from the Sky Pod – a bar selling (very reasonable) cocktails and a smattering of sharing platters – to the Darwin Brasserie on 36 or the Fenchurch Seafood Bar & Grill on 37.

After a summery selection of what my mother would call ‘Salady Bits’ – fresh bread, asparagus, delicious cold meats and a splendid chorizo and potato salad – James 1 chose the beef rib, a huge, tender cut of meat served pink with buttery carrots, beans, spuds and a Yorkshire pudding large enough to be worn as a hat.

Value-wise, the Darwin Brasserie is very much in line from the city’s other hardcore brunches, and if you like beautiful views and Bloody Marys the deal is probably one of the best in town.

For maximum value, I’d recommend going later in the afternoon so you’re hungry for one of the more impressive mains; the Eggs Benedict and full English breakfasts looked good, but I suspect you’ll get more bang for your buck with the more lunchy options, like the salt beef brisket, leg of lamb, beef rib or lemon sole.

Unlimited Brunch at Darwin Brasserie | Supper in the Suburbs

That is until I found out that the Darwin Brasserie (one of the Sky Garden’s cocktail bar or restaurants) had started doing an unlimited brunch and it entitled you to jumping the queues!

When we decided we’d get brunch at the Sky Garden, the unlimited brunch at Darwin Brasserie was the obvious choice.

Well, it is made up of an unlimited buffet for starters, unlimited bloody mary’s, a choice of main course cooked to order, followed by another unlimited buffet of puddings, cakes and confectionery.

The variety of dishes on offer is pretty impressive: cured meats, smoked seafood, a variety of salads including tomato and mozzarella and (my favourite) creamy bacon potato salad, as well as prawn cocktail and a selection of breads to name just a few.

There are some great (and not so great) restaurants in the City which will charge you that for a steak alone, let alone the salads, puddings and drinks I had on top.

Review: Breakfast In The Sky At Darwin Brasserie | House of Coco

Enter Darwin, the 36th floor brasserie located within the Walkie Talkie’s lush Sky Garden that combines understated luxe with a view to kill.

Free passes into the Sky Garden do fully-book quickly with tourists eagerly visiting the Europe’s highest garden, so a reservation to Darwin’s is the fastest ticket to the best view, & guaranteed access to the garden afterwards as well.

The breakfast menu covers everything from a ‘power boost’ fruit salad with granola & greek yoghurt; Continental grazing basket of pastries; British breakfast rolls filled with crisp dry cured bacon, cumberland sausage & free range egg & tomatoes if you need more than a coffee to get you going in the morning.

After hearing so much about Darwin’s ‘Breakfast Brûlée’ – a sweet mix of Greek yoghurt, granola, berry compote, orange blossom honey, organic seeds & nuts served with a shot of blueberry & goji berry smoothie, it felt like a very easy sharing dish to nibble over, fuelling us with fibre & energy for the day.

With a crisp brown sugar covering, the Breakfast Brûlée lives up to all expectations any sweet-tooth/desert fiend could dream of; once the brown sugar seal has been cracked with the spoon, the layers of natural yoghurt slid alongside the berry compote & honey forming a different mix of flavours with each spoonful.

Restaurant review: Darwin Brasserie, Sky Garden | The London ...

One of the first things you should consider when pairing wine with food is whether to mirror or contrast the bottle with the dish.

Either are absolutely fine to do, but one of the big no-nos is to juxtapose great with humble or humble with great, and it’s a sin Darwin Brasserie is woefully guilty of.

If that were true its pairing with Sky Garden’s unrivalled setting would be an eye watering prospect, but as it is the humble food drags the experience back down to earth like a lead weight on a hot air balloon.

A glance around the restaurant shows table after table of people fervently grinding salt and pepper over their respective dishes to give them a semblance of flavour, but all the salt in the Dead Sea couldn’t rescue this level of tastelessness.

Why you need cod, hake AND stone bass on a main course menu of just seven dishes is beyond me, and given what we knew of the vegetable quality the other dishes were probably best avoided.

Darwin | Restaurants in Wandsworth, London

Darwin is a new and creative restaurant nestled between Clapham Junction and Wandsworth Town, in the heart of St John’s hill.

The restaurant is the culmination of a dream held by the Head Chef and owner Shane Marshall and is the result of years of design and planning.

As the name implies, Darwin has evolved from a simple beginning to a successful restaurant which aims to provide an excellent dining experience.

Shane puts his twist on dishes he has learned working at hugely successful fine dining restaurants including La Petite Maison, Tom Aikens and Capital House to develop exciting modern dishes with the freshest ingredients, which are being enjoyed in our cosy and relaxed atmosphere.

The food sharing concept is very important at Darwin, this gives the guest the best chance to try a range of dishes and tastes and create a wider dining experience.
