Darkhorse, East Village, Stratford

Set at the base of one of the East Village towers (former Olympic Athletes Village) in Stratford, Darkhorse is a seemingly aptly named contender for one of the best places to eat in London I’ve come across in quite a while.

My squid ink arancini with aiola (£4.50) was one to savour – and to keep in mind for future visits while Kemey’s pear and walnut salad with watercress and Gorgonzola (£6.50 as a side, £12 as a main) did justice to this classic combo of yum.

Roasted in the restaurant’s Bertha (a giant indoor charcoal oven made in South London of cast iron and stainless steel that I am now slightly obsessed with), it yielded many of the sort of mmmm moments sought when having a steak.

Kemey had no complaints about her Bertha roasted hake with pumpkin, chilli and Roscoff onions (£17) either.

Sides of a gem salad with baby spinach leaves and roast potatoes with rosemary and garlic (£4 each) paired nicely with our mains.

Come and join us on Saturday 10th June from 9.30am to celebrate the re-launch of our  lovely newly refurbished Local larder and Coffee shop!

It’s almost 8 years since we first had the idea for a local food store in Brixton Village and much has happened… We are happy to be back doing what we love most – which is celebrating the fantastic local makers, bakers, brewers, distillers and growers on our doorstep.

Our coffee is from Volcano Coffee Works and roasted just  the road in SW9 and we’ve been working with fantastic local baristas to get our coffee just as we like it.

The food was great (we had the tasting menu), the wine was good, the service was great and the waiter knew all about wine.

Would definitely go again Went there for a late lunch on Saturday with 4 friends, the food was absolutely delicious and the service on point.

would recommend this place What a fabulous place - really delicious food & very friendly staff.

On the flipside wine and starter were really good and very nice staff, but not to justify the price.

The food was delicious, shame about the slow service.

The name of this popular Lavender Hill pizzeria hints at the south Italian heritage - there's a focus on all things Neapolitan here.

The pizzas are made from '00' flour, they're topped with San Marzano tomatoes, and are cooked in an authentic wood-fired pizza oven - apparently built by Neapolitan artisans, no less.

Options range from a simple marinara or margherita to a mimosa (with double cream, sweetcorn, ham and mozzarella), pizza vesuvio (tomato sauce, ricotta cheese, aubergine, mozzarella, ham and fresh basil) and a house special made with wild Neapolitan broccoli, aubergine, mixed sweet peppers, tomato sauce and mozzarella.

Outside of the pizzas options include saltimbocca, salads, focaccia bread with rosemary, garlic and olive oil, bruschetta pomodoro and polpette al sugo di casa mia - homemade meatballs in tomato sauce with parmesan.

Desserts, such as tiramisu, torta caprese and girella nutella, keep things traditional.
