MOMMI - deliciously different : MOMMI

Internationally renowned artist and LA based photographer Ben Watts, (brother of movie star, Naomi Watts), is an icon in his own right.

Shooting for the likes of Nike, Vanity Fair, Elle and Rolling Stone, Watts brings the frenetic verve of street photography to his diverse body of work.

With an incredible variety of subjects – from teenage ice skaters and Brooklyn biker gangs to world-famous actors, supermodels and musicians – Watts captures a feeling of barely contained, youthful energy.

MOMMI’s SW London branch is home to a carefully curated collection from Ben Watts’ brilliant body of work; a bright, vivacious collection of energetic photos and prints.

With Ben’s direction, his subjects become performers from the moment they step into his ring.”

Mommi Bottomless Brunch Review - Sharking for Chips and Drinks

Walking into Mommi off Clapham High Street is like walking into the city’s latest night-time hotspot, thanks to its atmospheric lighting , DJ in full swing, laughter, chatter and clinking Champagne glasses echoing around an assortment of tables for more than just two.

SW was out in full force to enjoy an amalgamation of menu influences from LA, South America and Japan, in a setting that glistened gold, amber and hues of red around a prominent bar counter and an impressive open kitchen, with charcoal grill and sushi counter, opposite cosy rounded leather booths.

The compliment can’t be echoed for the Huevos Rancheros however – consisting of scrambled egg, heirloom tomato, red onion, spinach and mushroom, crispy tortilla, aji panca beans, cassava fries and coriander crème fraiche.

Mommi excelled on that front – leaving the bottle on the table in an ice bucket so we could help ourselves, although that wasn’t necessary thanks to the ever present staff keeping an eye on filling up glasses.

If you want Mommi to be the spot for your first date or brunch catch up on the other hand, ask for a spot in their outside or downstairs seating area, when you can talk to your heart’s content and then make your way back to the main floor to carry on your evening over drinks.

Cavorting among the trendy new hubbub that is Clapham High Street?

There’s a new restaurant in town, and they’re showcasing a top selection of international flavours and frivolities.

A veritable selection of global spices and sumptuous flavours, Mommi features an international hybrid where Japanese and Latin cultures collide.

Diners are invited to sample a gluttonous array of raw, fresh and healthy plates, most presented on colourful tableware imported from Japan.

South America and Japan dominate the liquor cabinet too, with wines and piscos on offer for those fancying an exotic mouthful.

At the other, Clapham North and a clutch of lively, friendly watering holes.

There is an open kitchen and open flames to match, with spacious booths suggestive of Mommi being a popular choice for larger parties.

The menu is divided into fish, meat, veg and sides, with a couple of specials relayed by our waiter.

The garnish and vegetable side of things took on the colour and textures of Peru more than Japan, with lots of bright, vibrant purees of sweetcorn and avocado.

Scallops with chorizo and serrano ham seemed a fish out of water on the menu – the introduction of a third cuisine maybe a step too far –  but within the narrative of the meal, swam confidently alongside our other dishes.

There’s a take on a full English in the form of crispy pork served with spicy beans, purple potato pancakes, a fried egg, roast tomatoes and an yuzu-steeped mushroom.

Bright and airy: Mommi's look mimics its menu The menu also features a raw section – available all day, not just at brunch – which boasts generous slabs of super-fresh fish in the form of sashimi, ceviche, tartare and sushi.

To drink there’s a hefty selection of cocktails with exotic twists, our favourite being the Bloody Pisco – a take on the Bloody Mary made with yuzu, wasabi and soy along with your choice of three different types of chilli.

Although its large corner site superficially seems like a dozen others in the street – outdoor tables, sturdy-looking doorman, prominent bar counter – the grill and ‘raw bar’ have been set up to attract all-week custom, drinkers or not.

There’s a charcoal grill and sushi counter, preparing Japanese-Peruvian dishes (not an improbable fusion, as many of Peru’s best restaurants reflect the strong Japanese influence there).

The raw fish was up to Japanese restaurants standards, and yellowtail sashimi was well-priced (£5 for three pieces) with all the trimmings, including a cumin-flavoured shiso leaf.

Peru is more dominant in other dishes, such as lovely giant white corn lightly caramelised and served with coriander and the citrus kick of yuzu.

A few things were perhaps a bit too try-hard, such as the scallop ceviche: the scallop and citrus dressing was good, but the delicacy of flavour was drowned out by the mint, pomegranate arils and raw red onion.
