Restaurant Review: Blues Kitchen Brixton | The Soulmates Blog

We’ve mentioned before in a previous post that SW2 is the newest London foodie capital, so with this in mind my date and I were intrigued at the chance to dine in the newly refurbished Brixton branch of the Blues Kitchen.

The decor is based on a New Orleans saloon with a hint of French bistro, veering away from the standard diluted Americana style so many London restaurants now adhere to.

I went for the New Orleans gumbo, while my starving date ordered the burnt ends and short pork ribs.

The decor, menu and cocktail lists provided great talking points, helping to avoid the dreaded awkward silence daters can sometimes experience.

Heralded for their authentic Texan BBQ, live blues music and top-notch cocktails, Blues Kitchen brings a dose of the Deep South to Brixton.

Following on from the successes of their Camden and Shoreditch sites, the third Blues Kitchen comes spread across two floors, with a lively atmosphere owing much to the live blues, roots and soul music that plays across two stages every night of the week.

With 16-hour smoked short beef rib, juicy slow-smoked pulled pork and Texan beef brisket on the menu, it makes sense to come on an empty stomach, and the hugely popular Johnny Smash and Wibble signature cocktails are well worth checking out.

Sister to venues in Shoreditch and Brixton, Blues Kitchen Camden is one of our absolute favourites.

Located on bustling Camden High Street, this is as much a delicious BBQ restaurant as it is a thriving bar and live music venue.

Once you’re done at the table it’s over to the dance floor, where Blues Kitchen bring a packed out venue some infectious Rhythm and Blues tunes deep into the evening.

It’s no wonder the venue pulls in such an eclectic crowd.

The famous Blues Kitchen stage has been graced by names like Seasick Steve, Pete Doherty, The Pretty Things and Mystery Jets – swing by soon and catch the next big thing while enjoying a fun-loving Camden night out.

Blues Kitchen models itself on the Wild West and Deep American South, bringing bourbon and big plates to Camden.

Blues Kitchen Camden have a one track mind when it comes to food; it’s all about the Texan BBQ.

True to its American roots, Blues Kitchen Camden has a whopping selection of bourbon and whiskeys.

Our fling with America’s Deep South shows no signs of slowing down and Blues Kitchen Camden is still one of the best spots in London to get a fill of Americana.

From the low-lit, hot and heavy mix of blues music, through to the sauce slathered tender meat, a night in Blues Kitchen is more than a cheap knock-off of the wild west, it's wicked, tonnes of fun and utterly delicious.

This Brixton branch - on Acre Lane - is one of three Blues Kitchens in London.

Each follows the same theme - food of a southern American bent served to a soundtrack of live music.

And while the music of the moniker does play more than a small part on the music programme, it's not all about the blues.

There's usually something on every night of the week.

The food menu takes in classic Deep South dishes, with New Orleans gumbo, catfish jambalaya, Texan brisket, St Louis pork rib and a creole bean burger and jerk chicken salads also feature.

This lively, contemporary bar-diner on the main Camden drag celebrates American musical heritage in song (live shows, DJs, free harmonica lessons), spirits and sustenance.

The food is all-American in spirit and substance, with barbecue and burgers featuring prominently.

There are around 50 bourbons in a variety of categories, some used as bases for cocktails.

‘America’s native spirit’ is how Kentucky bourbon is described, with Ancient Age and Evan Williams typical examples; Tennessee, ‘the first cousin of Kentucky’, is honoured with a full suit of Jack Daniel’s labels.

This Curtain Road venue is close in style and sentiment to its big sister, The Blues Kitchen over in Camden.

Expect, then, a restaurant, bar and music venue with a hefty Stateside influence - from its bourbon and its barbecues all the way to its blues.

Music does have a big part to play here.

There's live artists pretty much every night of the week, with everything from rock 'n' roll to swing, motown, roots and even gospel complementing all that smokey blues.

Keep an eye out for nights where food and music combine in happy harmony - think bargain ribs gnawed to a soundtrack of soul.
