The Stonhouse

The Stonhouse is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Clapham High Street. A light and airy pub and garden with a modern European brasserie style menu.

It sits away from the madness of Clapham High Street, where havoc hits the streets every weekend in the form of rugby lads, hen nights, Australians, muscle-bound gay boys and everything in between, staggering between The White House, Revolution, Two Brewers and Infernos (the list is pretty endless – if you've not been out in Clapham, you really need to top up your Oyster card and get cracking.

The Stonhouse is easy to find, on the appropriately named Stonhouse Street, just off the High Street (closest tube: Clapham Common).

Which is another point, the Stonhouse is a great place for a date – friendly, relaxed, just sophisticated enough and nobody will bat an eyelid if you’re gay, lesbian, trans or sitting with your thaibride.com – it's a laid-back, friendly place in an already laid-back, friendly part of town.

However, for those that prefer to sit at comfortable tables and chairs with linen tablecloths, the Stonhouse basic pub furniture might seem a bit lacking.

A lot of the staff I've been served by at Stonhouse (I've been there a fair few times because they do a damn good lunch and brunch menu too) can be a bit scatty – if you're relaxed and in a good mood this just adds to the fun.

Being nestled off to one side of busy Clapham High Street hasn’t stopped Londoners desperate for the authentic British pub vibe from flocking to The Stonhouse to ride a new wave in the London gastropub scene.

The Stonhouse is a refurbished heritage building housing an incredibly well-stocked bar and a tranquil garden for relaxing out of doors, all decorated with a modestly-phrased taste for the finer things in life.

The Stonhouse has verve, elegance, and an unfussy simplicity all rolled into one.

The Stonhouse’s superb wine list is a top attraction for many London punters pushing to the bar amidst the convivial atmosphere down Clapham High Street, while hopheads can sample a diverse range of cask, keg, and bottled beers before what we consider The Stonhouse’s truly main attraction.

Keeping the locally-sourced ethos firmly alive, The Stonhouse’s chef’s are blessed not only with deft knife-hands, but by chicken, lamb, and pork produced on The Stonhouse’s parent company Three Cheers Pub Co.’s very own Hampshire farm.

"With sixteen types of gin available alongside several different tonics, the possible drinks combinations on offer at the Clapham eatery were, if not endless, certainly varied enough to derail any pre-Paddy's Day cleanse" We had promised ourselves, with St Patrick’s Day fast approaching, that we wouldn’t drink too much that week.

With sixteen types of gin available alongside several different tonics, the possible drinks combinations on offer at the Clapham eatery were, if not endless, certainly varied enough to derail any pre-Paddy’s Day cleanse.

For our main courses we switched, Hattie going for seafood with a beer-battered hake fillet (“Just a fancy way of saying fish and chips,” Mel the manager cheerfully explained) while I ordered the dairy-heavy tortellini, which was stuffed with goats cheese and roasted red pepper.

In any case, my banoffee desert should come as no surprise, if the experts are to be believed (don’t tell Michael Gove).

What was unusual, however, was that my banoffee was served in the form of a martini, complete with Absolut Vanilla, banana liqueur, caramel, maple syrup and cream.

Then we let off enough fire-works to make our local community wish they were living in the Helmand Province.

Then the police arrived to ask if any of us had witnessed the assault that had been committed in the pub opposite our house - in the Stonhouse.

But in a good way.

They both couldn't resist having fish pie on a Friday being the good Catholic school girls that they are.

We will definitely be back next time we go to the cinema - especially if they keep their Top Table offer going.
