Tsunami is a contemporary Japanese restaurant in the heart of Clapham.

A sleek, sophisticated location filled with wooden screens, luxurious leather seats and delicate Oriental touches, this is an excellent location for eating out in South London.

After-dinner cocktails aren’t to be missed out on, either.

Signature blends like the Japanese Mai Tai and Korean Fashion provide a refreshing Oriental tweak, and there’s a good choice of virgin cocktails, wines and sakes to offer a little something for all tastes.

We agreed to share dishes throughout and ordered Tsunami Grilled Scallops, cooked in a spicy creamy whisky sauce with masago (that stuff that looks like little orange bubbles but is actually fish roe).

Tsunami mixed tempura was a more conventional dish – a pleasant mix of shrimp and seasonal vegetables in a delicious, light and crisp tempura batter.

Served with a sake, soy and ponzu dressing, this was a delicious light hot dish that I hope I’ll get to order again.

I’d recommend this as the perfect way to try three different sake – we had Shirakabegura Daiginjo, Shirakabegura Junmai Dajingo and Kishanamien Umeshu To finish things off I enjoyed the Green Tea Chocolate Fondant – which came with a suitably runny green tea and chocolate centre.

Teas and coffees to complete an excellent meal We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Tsunami and I will certainly be back.

He started with lamb cutlets (£8.50), which looked like fusion cuisine as fashioned in a school play – the chops were finished off with a ham-fisted silver-foil cuff, and the kimchi chilli sauce was served in a scooped out, tired-looking cucumber.

The scallop was sliced thinly, and was effortlessly lovely, zinged up a bit with the poor-man’s caviar, rendered unputdownable by the chilli kick of the sauce.

R’s beef truffle (£18.50), a chargrilled, grain-fed rib-eye with exotic mushrooms and truffle sauce, was another story.

Local favourites include gyuniku maki, sirloin-steak rolls filled with mushrooms, sautéed in garlic, sake and soy sauce (£5) Mount Fuji Stanton House Hotel, The Avenue, Stanton Fitzwarren, Wiltshire (0870 084 1388) Popular with employees of the nearby Honda factory, this place has floor seating and a no-shoes policy.

Share shabu shabu – sliced sirloin that you boil at the table, with dipping sauces and rice (£28 for three courses) Koo 127 Old Street, Ludlow, Shropshire (01584 878462) This 20-seater operation is the good-value option in gourmet Ludlow.

This suburban sushi restaurant and cocktail bar has found a recipe for success and is sticking to it.

Next, golden tempura-battered vegetables came in all textures, from soft sweet potato to chewy shiitake mushroom or crunchy lotus root.

Sushi arrived beautifully presented on glazed earthenware, with slightly sweet, melt-in-the-mouth white tuna sashimi best enjoyed unadorned; dragon roll maki, combining sweet eel, avocado and tempura prawns, showed off the chefs’ skills.

The small adjoining cocktail bar is a safe bet for pre- or post-prandial drinks.
