Benito's Hat – Some of the Best Burritos & Margaritas in London

Benito’s Hat started with a small store in Goodge Street in London, lovingly conceived by Ben Fordham and Felipe Fuentes Cruz, our founders.

Ben and Felipe were passionate about bringing simple, fresh Mexican food to the UK that was both authentic and modern.

Since then we have opened 6 more stores in the UK, all of them being true to the original ideals that have made Benito’s Hat into one of the most loved up and coming Mexican brands in the country.

From the beginning, Benito’s Hat dedicated itself to serving simple, fresh food that is quick and tasty.

Whether it is a breakfast taco and coffee, a quick ‘grab-and-go’ for the business crowd, a break from a day’s shopping to recharge, or a fulfilling meal and a few margaritas to kick start an evening out, Benito’s Hat offers a welcoming, character-filled environment throughout the day.

I do mean the restaurant, not one of the many eccentric pieces of head-gear from one Mexican politician, Benito Juarez.

Now his hat is responsible for arguably one of the best casual Mexican restaurant groups in London.

It was October 1st, and the seventh birthday of Benito’s Hat.

The hat was heaving, birthday joy spilling out from the sides, and it was time for a burrito.

The Covent Garden branch was the first of the eight currently spread across London, and a hearty round of applause echoed round as the chefs came out to join the party.

THE Westgate’s Mexican restaurant has been slammed over swollen tubs of pina colada mix, a foul smell and a risk of food poisoning.

Benito’s Hat in the Westgate Social – an area of street food vendors in the new shopping centre – was given a two-star rating by hygiene inspectors in November.

The restaurant was rated ‘poor’ when it came to food hygiene and safety but inspectors had ‘some’ confidence in management to turn things around.

A spokesperson for Benito’s Hat said: “Since the initial inspection we have changed the management team in Oxford and have increased the focus on operational standards and food safety.

“We are working with our food safety specialists and the council to ensure that our Oxford restaurant achieves the same high standards as the rest of our business.”

Having no idea about what makes a good Taco, I was accompanied by my friend Matt, who spent a year living and working in Mexico.

We then dug into chips with salsa, which were so filling I wasn’t sure I’d be able to stomach the bottomless tacos – but luckily, tacos don’t go in the stomach, tacos go in the heart.

And so we filled our hearts with sautéed vegetable tacos, grilled and braised chicken tacos, super-slow braised pork tacos, chipotle-grilled steak tacos, beef brisket barbacoa tacos and the restaurant’s Christmas special (which comes in a burrito but we were given an amazing sample taco-size), the pork belly with cranberry salsa and crackling.

The tacos were absolutely delicious, with the beef brisket and pork belly making it to the top of the list, although we certainly wouldn’t have been offended if they were spicier and less-cheesy (although you can say no to cheese when they’re being prepared!)

Benito’s Hat certainly lived up to our expectations, and if you can impress somebody who used to eat tacos for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the place has to be worth a visit.

Benito's Hat in Oxford Circus is a top notch casual eatery for all things Mexican in the city.

Blending the rustic with the culturally colourful, Benito's Hat is a markedly cool location, brimming with raw stone, colourful trinkets and a teaming back bar set alongside on-point branding and laid-back dining tables.

Hailed for their burritos and margarita's combined, Benito's Hat is the perfect excuse to scoff some of the finest South American morsels known to man, as guests can get their hands on everything from chipotle grilled chicken burritos and super-slow braised pork tacos, to a pomegranate margarita or a mojito.
