Due to my passing interest in food blogs I was allocated the task of identifying a few options for a relatively inexpensive and informal central London lunch venue.

Now I don't eat meat (not for any strong ethical or religious reasons, I just find it easy to do without it) so lots of the blog posts I'd read singing the praises of Byron's burgers were a bit wasted on me.

But I did notice that there were a lot of excellent sounding side dishes mentioned, and having established that there was a vegetarian burger option, I was pretty confident that I'd be happy eating at Byron too.

And so the food- well as expected there is only one main vegetarian burger and a salad on the menu.

With all our sides and nibbly bits we did seem to get through quite a lot of food, and I was very disappointed to find that I was too full to fit in one of the delightful sounding Byron milkshakes.

The first rule of James Street is: eat burgers at Patty & Bun.

The second rule of James Street is: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES eat burgers at Giraffe Burgers & Cocktails.

Barely balanced, the three buns are set a rakish angles to each other, onion rings spilling out like guts from the top of the burger.

These burger patties wouldn't have been out of place in a NHL game.

No excuse for this bun fail, especially when the rest of the burger was so dry.

Great.

The Dip & Flip burger takes the same structure as the Bacon Cheese Burger, but kicks out the bacon and replaces it with a layer of gravy-dipped roast beef.

You've got a great cheeseburger AND a layer of juicy, moreish roast beef topped with gravy, mustard and ketchup.

There is also the same sprinkle of white cabbage below the patty, and the same dill pickle mayonnaise adding texture and acidity to the construction.

It was a over a year ago when I ventured across London to first meet up with Burger Bear's Tom Reaney, and shortly afterwards posted London's first review of his burger street food offering.Since then Tom's star has been in the ascendency, to the point where he was crowned Heat 4 winner of the London Burger Bash - a competition that pits purveyors of burgers against each other in a battle for the Golden Patty.

So I had a Friday lunchtime free and decided to pop down to Red Market for a winners lunch.Grizzly Bear - £7.50 (that's £1 more than last summer - it's inflation, innit)The Burger Bear burger has been upgraded from being served on a paper plate and is now neatly-ish tucked into a takeaway carton.

His burgers used to be a strict 10% fat maximum in the mix, but it seems he's upped that, and it transforms the patty from good to excellent.

Great work on this custom Burger Bear bun.I just had the burger, skip, so no accessories for me.This burger is a joy to eat, from the super-oaked bacon to the perfectly pink, aged and juicy patty.

Burger Bear has come of age, and I urge you make a visit to sample his wares.
