Restaurant Review: Mac & Wild, London | Life & Loves

We donned some fancy-ish clothes (me bringing out a dress I love, but is too dressy for every-weekend wear, too low-cut for work), I whacked on the date-night makeup (because wearing Mac Diva is great for eating a burger…) and we headed out for a much anticipated evening.

I could just finish the review of Mac & Wild here, by telling you to go, to go book a table, eat plenty of meat, drink lots of whisky and feel very merry, very happy and very full.

A perfectly cooked egg (no set yolk here), encased in wonderfully flavourful venison meat, covered in crisp breadcrumbs and served with a mustard so perfect I’m tempted to contact Mac & Wild and find their supplier.

Well, London’s best burger of course… Whilst I’m not quite sure it deserves that title (more research needed, you see), it was a damn good burger.

My lipstick was down my chin before I was halfway through the burger… We both went for sides of Haggis Mac & Cheese.

Inamo: Covent Garden's tech gem - London Lamppost

Hidden along a side street in the heart of Covent Garden lies Inamo, the world’s first, and London’s only solely-interactive, restaurant.

Inamo truly is a dining experience like no other, where the guest is given “complete control” of their meal.

I found this to be far too dry, and unlike many other places where crispy duck is served, at Inamo the waiter did not remove any meat from the bone for us.

There are many other dishes on the Large Sharing Dishes menu that I would recommend instead of the duck, such as the two Thai curries.

My companion tried the “Hop Inamo”, the restaurant’s signature beer and he said it paired well with many of the dishes.

The Anchor & Hope - London's best Gastro Pub - London Lamppost

ambience   menu   food   busyness

Pubs of all types and sizes now offer some form of ‘enhanced’ cooking, many referring to themselves as gastro pubs despite not really being one in the true sense of the genre.

While The Eagle, Britain’s first gastro pub, celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, it was in 2003 that Jonathan Jones, a young protégé of Fergus Henderson, left the kitchen at St John to open The Anchor & Hope on The Cut in Southwark.

This, along with the daily changing menu, a chalkboard where the dishes limited by number are scratched off, a daily changing seasonal aperitif, and the cheerful nature of the blue pinstriped apron adorned waiting team, creates a vibrant while relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to while away an afternoon or evening.

The mains are always a combination of seasonal fish or cuts of meat and vegetables, ranging from dishes for one, to slow cooked one pot roasts to share.

The whole process of pulling the meat off the bone with the giant stainless steal serving spoon and carving fork, and piling your plate high with it, along with the cooking veg, potatoes and sides of buttered hispi cabbage and lentils, is wonderfully communal and convivial.
