Gaylen Ross’s methodical but overlong documentary “Killing Kasztner: The Jew Who Dealt With Nazis” pores over the life and legacy of Rudolf Kastner (who is sometimes called Rezo, or Reszo, Kasztner), a leader of a Hungarian Jewish aid and rescue committee in World War II that helped Jewish refugees escape to Hungary from Nazi-occupied Europe.

That seemingly heroic deed and its bitter aftermath still resonate in Israeli politics, although several young Israelis interviewed by Ms. Ross on the streets of Tel Aviv say they have never heard of Kastner.

In 1953 Malchiel Gruenwald, a rabble-rousing pamphleteer, accused Kastner of having collaborated with the Nazis by failing to warn 400,000 Hungarian Jews that they were being sent to Auschwitz.

A libel case brought by the Israeli government against Gruenwald ended with the judge’s ruling that Kastner had “sold his soul to the Devil.”

Turning the court against him were documents showing that Kastner had written letters to war-crimes prosecutors seeking leniency for Nazi officers whom he had bribed to save Jewish lives.

It's easy to see why Erick Kastner's 1936 novel is being reissued now: his focus on a pre-Nazi Germany, in the grip of recession, where over-educated white-collar workers are struggling not to return to the impoverished states of their working-class parents, has something to say about our present times.

Kastner viewed his account of Fabian, the disillusioned Berlin copywriter, unable to throw himself into the decadence the city has to offer when all he can see is people prostituting themselves around him, as a warning of what was surely to come.

Fabian is not a cynic but an idealist, capable of acts of heroism, who despairs when his girlfriend sells herself to a movie producer.

When their devastating report reached the West in late June, immediate protests from the Vatican and the King of Sweden combined with American threats of retaliatory bombing of Budapest led the hitherto pro-German regime in Hungary to abort Eichmann’s planned deportation of Jews from Budapest.

The subsequent accusation against its leader, Rezso Kasztner, a 37-year-old journalist from Cluj, was that he was informed of the reports at an early stage but preferred to keep them secret because he did not wish to endanger what were to prove abortive negotiations with Eichmann to ransom Hungary’s entire Jewish community.

As a reward for his silence, he was permitted to save just over 2,000 specially chosen Jews — nearly 1,700 on the so-called “Kasztner Train” and 76 others (including the author of this review) from the marshalling point for Auschwitz at the Budakalasz brickworks north of Budapest.

Bogdanor has produced what may be the best historical review of Kasztner’s wartime activities produced in recent years.

For decades, critics of Kasztner have been swatted by the Jewish establishment, which generally has given precedence to emotion over rational, evidence-based historical research.
