Restaurant Review: MAMIE's

Mamie’s, on Catherine Street, right across the street from the Theatre Royal where Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is playing, serves many varieties of crépes - both sweet and savoury (also known as galettes).

Other options include the Forest Compléte - egg, ham, emmental cheese, créme fraiche, mushrooms and onions (£8.90), and the cleverly-named L’Edith Piaf - blue cheese, pears, walnuts and mixed salad leaves (£7.90).

I had the delicious La Chateaubriand - a rolled galette wth sausage, onions, whole grain mustard and mixed salad leafs - a snip at £7.90 - and very very tasty.

Or if you’re a bit too full from your main course, then a butter sugar or a lemon sugar might be best for you (£3.00 and £4.50 also has a small menu of starters including tapas and salads (though two were sold out on the day we visited), as well as an excellent beer and cider menu, and a cocktail menu that are specially-made and all at £8.00.

So in the case of one of the galettes, you can add more salad, honey, an extra egg, ham, or onions, all at a very small surcharge.

Review: Why stunning French food and excellent drinks at MAMIE'S ...

It says a lot about MAMIE'S that, according to staff, the restaurant has been a huge hit with London's French community since it opened in the summer.

But if you're dining at MAMIE'S, in Catherine Street, the praise is justified as it's a close to an authentic French experience you'll possibly find in London.

It would be tempting to write this off as impersonal, an ill-judged attempt to mix an old fashioned French restaurant with technology you'd come to expect from a soulless fast food chain.

A real treat in quality food, with the former a sublime combination of cream cheese, salmon and delicate coating while the latter also serves up a stellar combination of egg, ham and mushrooms.

The range on offer is spectacular, with the La Magritte offering an impossibly flavoursome combination of home-cooked apples, ice cream and caramel.

The ongoing influx of new restaurants to Covent Garden continues - and if you love a good crepe then this one's for you.

Mamie's is both a creperie AND a cider bar - with the focus very much on Britanny cuisine.

It's a three storey affair, with crepes and galettes (which will be gluten free) the order of the day.

On the menu is: And if you think three floors of crepes are too much - then don't worry as the basement has been reserved for a cider cellar - La Cidrothèque (you will need something to wash down that pastry, after all).

Down there, they'll have 10 French ciders (from both Brittany and Normandy), as well as cider from Britain, Ireland, Sweden, Belgium and even New Zealand.

Crêpes, galettes and cider.

Which makes Mamie’s crêperie-cum-cidrotheque – that’s a cider bar, bébé – basically the culinary equivalent of Brigitte Bardot.

On my visit the basement cider bar was still under construction, so it was pancakes only, ordered via a swish iPad system and dished up in what felt like seconds.

First up were the galettes, French savoury pancakes made with buckwheat flour.

There’s an option on those iPads to make your crêpe vegan or dairy free.
