Moc Kitchen London Review: Is The Pho Any Good?

I review the pho at central London’s Moc Kitchen in my pursuit for Vancouver-grade Vietnamese food here in the UK.

There was something about the name of this Vietnamese restaurant  – Moc Kitchen – that instinctively made me reluctant to click on it while searching for pho restaurants online – probably the notion that it was merely a mock kitchen and not a real one.

But when I got a craving for Asian food and wanted to go for Pho at around 4pm I found that most places tend to shut for a break between 4 -5.30 pm so I decided to give Moc Kitchen a try.

I’ll say right away that the portion sizes were indeed the only complaint I had after my meal at Moc Kitchen, and I can only assume that balancing rent with costs must be a struggle, but other than that I was pretty happy with my pho stop here.

Verdict: If I want pho and am in central London I would happily go back to Moc Kitchen as it is a solid if over-priced choice, but my search for the perfect pho is in London far from over.

Vietnam In The Heart Of London At Moc Kitchen

Vietnamese cuisine is a mix of flavors that says freshness and sunshine; the tingling heat from the chillis, the sharp limes, the earthy herbs, everything excites the palate.

Tucked away in a small lane amid the buzz of Soho, Moc Kitchen is a new Vietnamese addition to the London food scene.

For starters, there are fresh summer rolls, plump and tightly packed with a good balance of soft noodles, crunchy vegetables and succulent prawn (or the vegetarian option with tender tofu).

For the main course there are a variety of curries, rice dishes, and noodles, but the star of the show is the classic Vietnamese pho.

With humble interiors, friendly service and a convenient location, Moc kitchen makes light and fresh Vietnamese food that is apt for any weather.

MOC Kitchen (no, not a showroom fixture) is the new kid on the block, bringing a bit of Vietnamese vim to this dingy underpass.

One side of the walkway hosts a dinky café for those dining in; the other serves take away options, including banh mi made from scratch.

Both sides were busy on our three visits, creating a bit of buzzy hubbub, too.

Elements need to be honed before they ramp up the expansion – unless their aim is to create a middle-of-the-road Vietnamese restaurant chain rather than become a serious challenger to the likes of Song Que and Cay Tre.

London already does pretty well for good, cheap Vietnamese restaurants and MOC Kitchen is going to have to go some way further if it really wants to compete with the best.
