Thank you for all your support over the years to which there have been a lot of changes at The Vanilla Pod.

As you may well be aware I have been working alone in the kitchen for the last 4 years, so I do apologise if I am unable to see you all but you are more than welcome to pop your head around the door into the kitchen, it would be great to see you.

In honour of a previous occupant of the cottage in which The Vanilla Pod is housed, we begin with some original lines of poetry: Small and still and round and furry: was it an embalmed, beloved cat?

If my ambition to invoke that former resident – Mr Thomas Stearns Eliot OM, no less – has not been achieved, the above lines perhaps a more fitting homage to Pam Ayres than to the author of The Waste Land, then at least let me assure lovers of Eliot’s verse that this review will end not with a bang, but with the usual whimper.

Indeed there is enough to admire about The Vanilla Pod that the small criticisms I am about to make of it I make in the recognition that it deserves to be judged by stellar standards that it narrowly fails to meet.

With impressive service, a good wine list and pricing that takes no liberties, this is a very likeable restaurant.

The Vanilla Pod, with its 50 shades of brown, is too vanilla for its own good, and the nagging sense is of a gifted cook who should test himself a little more after a decade of success in the Nobel laureate’s former home.

Vanilla Pod restaurant review 2010 August Marlow | French Cuisine ...

The Vanilla Pod is in a parade of shops in the centre of the town, in a house that was once the residence of poet T.S. Eliot.

Sea bass was pan-fried with a puree of garlic and red wine.

Loin of venison was better, carefully cooked medium rare and served with a confit of celeriac that had a hint of sweetnesss that I was not expecting, but a rich sauce of the cooking juices that had been thickened with just a little chocolate, (15/20).

Overall I thought this was a very enjoyable meal, with good quality ingredients, pretty presentation and cooking technique that was generally capable.

Just a few minor issues dragged down the overall standard a little, but at a bill of £65 a head this represents pretty good value for what was delivered.
