The ICA opened in 1947, a space for artists, writers and scientists to debate new ideas.

In 2017 Stefan Kalmár of Artists Space, New York took over as director with an exciting new programme of exhibitions, films, talks and events starting at the beginning of October.

The building has been stripped back to its former modernist simplicity, with our new bar and canteen to complement it.

Ben Coombs is head chef, while Fin Spiteri has designed our drinks list and will be in overall charge of the bar and front of house.

Rochelle Canteen in Arnold Circus is run by Melanie Arnold & Margot Henderson, it is also the home of their event catering company and offices.

In 2017 they opened a second site within the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Rochelle ICA is a restaurant and all day bar, Arnold & Henderson also runs all in-house catering.

Rochelle Canteen will be closed Good Friday & Easter Monday but open Saturday & Sunday.

Rochelle ICA will be open as normal Good Friday and over the weekend, closed Easter Monday.

Rochelle Canteen has taken over the bar at the revitalised ICA Behind the scenes: ICA director Stefan Kalmár, ex-Artists Space New York, wants visitors to be "fed well" with "passion and integrity", two things Rochelle Canteen founders Margot Henderson (wife of St John’s Fergus) and Melanie Arnold have in spades.

The concept: The original Rochelle Canteen, opened in a converted school bike shed in 2006, is a semi-secret Shoreditch hideaway beloved of artists, designers, cooks and thesps.

I had to call six times over three days to get the phone picked up; email bookings are also taken, which might be the simplest method.

Rochelle Canteen’s not for everyone, but for many people (myself included) it ticks many boxes.

It’s a good, low-key date restaurant, but it also works for groups of people and can work for business meetings too.

It’s particularly brilliant if you’re entertaining overseas guests, and want to show them what proper British home-style cooking can be like when done well.

The irony is that many of the recipes are not British at all, but reflect chef Arnold’s upbringing in New Zealand, yet they follow the Anglo-Saxon canon closely.

So it is brilliant news that Rochelle Canteen have opened a second restaurant at the Institute of Contemporary Arts on the Mall.

It may appear incongruous that the ICA, renowned for being such an avant-garde art space, should choose the adamantly classic Rochelle Canteen, but it is a fitting choice given their impeccably cool credentials.

Spiteri also prepares delicious definitive classic cocktails – don’t miss the negroni!

Desserts need a rave of their own: the most luscious yet gentle lemon tart with impeccable pastry is a thing of dreams, and we loved a huge slightly chewy meringue with grainy poached quince and lashings of Jersey yellow cream mixed with quince juices.

It is admittedly a lot less comfortable but the huge cheese scones, Montgomery Cheddar toasties, homemade cakes and Caravan coffee make it suitably alluring.

Ben Coombs, who has previously worked at Rochelle Canteen in Shoreditch as well as at The Beagle and Le Coq, is head chef.

Rochelle Canteen will have a changing seasonal menu for lunch and dinner as well as a bar snacks menu and a selection of homemade bakes.

Rochelle Canteen at the ICA is a great place to meet for dinner, share a drink and stay into the evening once the exhibitions close and the cinemas dim.

Rochelle Canteen will also supply food and drinks for venue hires within the ICA's 18th-century Nash and Brandon Rooms, our fully equipped theatre, working artists' studio and two state-of-the-art cinema spaces.
