food

Whether you believe this or not, it’s clear that The Clarence is certainly steeped in history and, fresh from renovation, it’s certainly a nice place to spend an hour or two after work.

Next, we both went for the steak – 21-day aged sirloin steak with a tarragon and mustard sauce, watercress salad and fries.

The tarragon and mustard sauce was deliciously thick and velvety, coating the steak and chips perfectly.

All in all, a tasty meal in a great, traditional pub setting.

The Tin Belly Room also offers a carvery trolley – 28-day aged British sirloin beef ‘on the bone’ with all the trimmings, served Wednesday – Sunday which, is definitely on my list to try when I return.

Just a hundred yards from Trafalgar Square, the MOD and the Horse Guard's Parade, The Clarence has an undeniably impressive location that attracts both locals and tourists alike; the PM himself may well drop in after a tiring day at nearby Number 10.

With the kitchen open all day, the pub is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat away from the busy hustle and bustle of London's West End, and, being opposite Trafalgar Studios, it's the perfect opportunity to get a pre-theatre nibble before a show.

Tourists in search of traditional British fish and chips or bangers and mash will find it here, while locals popping out from the office will no doubt appreciate the daily changing specials.

Real ales are given prime position in the intimate downstairs bar while the quieter Tin Belly Dining Room upstairs, available to hire for private lunches or dinners, business meetings and more, focuses more closely on the impressive wine list The Clarence has to offer.

The Clarence in Whitehall is a quaint and lively little pub, full of history and brimming with character, just moments from Trafalgar Square and Downing Street.

Part of the Geronimo groups of pubs, The Clarence is a great place to meet for a business lunch or for after work drinks, and with a fantastic choice of food you will be tempted to stay for dinner too.

The menu is predominantly comprised of British favourites from Cod and Chips, to Bangers and Mash, and if those don't tempt you there are also daily changing Specials.

Downstairs the bar serves a good choice of ales and an even better selection of great wines and champagnes; personally selected by Geronimo's very own Master of Wine.

With theatres, businesses and even the Houses of Parliament all close by, whatever your reason for being in Whitehall, you can find something to love about The Clarence.

Trialling the Tin Belly Dining Room at the Clarence, Whitehall

Pure serendipity provided a request to review the Tin Belly Dining Room at the Clarence coinciding with meeting an old friend who just happened to have worked a stone’s throw from the pub for the last thirty years.

The newly refurbished dining room specialised in gueridon service – the ‘Tin Belly Carving Trolley’ a pristine, shiny serving dish perched on a trolley.

The lid of the trolley opened to reveal the largest ‘on the bone sirloin of beef I’ve seen, with a side dish of Yorkshire pudding and jugs of gravy.

Ahead of the main course, we ordered a sharing platter of seasonal crudites with white bean and goats cheese dips and sat happily nibbling on stuff that really should have been diet friendly.

Do the same kind of dishes well and you get something like the food at the Tin Belly Dining Room.
