Partly to connect with him, partly I realised over time, cooking and eating Ghanaian food was a way for me to connect with his home too.

Food was my entry point to exploring this side of my identity and I fell in love with Dad's version of Groundnut Soup - which later became my Peanut Butter Stew, now a signature dish on my menu.

All my life I've cooked this dish when I needed nourishment, comfort and a taste of home - also cooking it for friends who would continuously pester "when are you going to cook that peanut butter stew again?"

This passion for cooking for people and sharing the flavours of Ghana led to the creation of the West African food adventure which has become Zoe's Ghana Kitchen.

Since 2010 I've established a successful casual dining restaurant, a busy Streetfood & Event Catering business and I have been lucky enough to write a cookbook of traditional recipes I have re-mixed for the modern kitchen, enabling more people than ever to join the African food adventure with me and explore flavours from Ghana in a way they can incorporate into every day cooking.

Next Month Zoe Adjonyoh, Founder of Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen, will bring her West African flavours to London Fields, with a new residency at The Institute of Light.

Her business began in 2010 in east London at the Hackney Wicked arts festival with a home-made sign saying ‘Zoe’s peanut butter stew’ – she’s come a long way since then with sell-out supper clubs, a tenure at Pop Brixton and even her own cookbook, but Zoe says returning to Hackney is ‘a true homecoming’.

Her new residency, beginning 7 March, will be the next chapter in exploring African cooking and championing African food and culture for the masses.

The residency will also see Zoe host regular events, one off dinners and collaborations with some of London’s leading chefs, continuing to pioneer African culture and women in the industry throughout the year.

Her residency at Pop Brixton has been replaced by Petare, bringing the heat to Brixton with Venezuelan arepas, following pop-ups and residencies in markets across London.

Zoe’s modern West African food has been thrilling Londoners at Pop Brixton since 2010, and now it’s time for her to settle among the other great restaurants in this part of London.

Zoe’s aim is to familiarise people with West African flavours, and she’s bringing some classics from Pop Brixton along with some fresh dishes to this new location.

New dishes include small plates, designed to be eaten with your hands, such as oto cakes with soft boiled egg; cassava crisps with scotch bonnet salsa; kenkey (a maize dumpling) with sardines and Zoe’s signature Ghanaian red red bean stew.

We love Zoe’s food and can’t wait to try the new dishes she’s developed for this change of location.

We’ve been working at creating loads of new and exciting dishes, but getting people familiar with African flavours is still what we’re all about.

She will take on a long-term residency at cinema and event space The Institute of Light on Helmsley Place, not far from where Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen first began with a stall at the Hackney Wicked arts festival.

The new site will be almost 10 times the size of the original Pop Brixton restaurant, which has now closed, allowing for up to 200 covers and much more kitchen space, plus a schedule of events.

Restaurateur: Zoe Adjonyoh Larger dishes will include jollof chicken with lettuce wraps and plantain pork belly, while there will also be a selection of specially-created cinema snacks such as akara fritters, crispy okra and kelewele, made with fried plantains.

She added: “The pop site was a great place to start but we very quickly outgrew it - it was very limiting for us because we had such a small kitchen and little seating space.”
