De Beauvoir Arms, 113 Southgate Road, Islington, London, N1 3JS ...

Back with a name change, the De Beauvoir Arms is an attractive pub that’s likely to attract the well-to-do neighbourhood regulars that surround it.

Standing on the corner of Southgate Road, the pub is an impressive structure.

Boxy and big, there is a small patio out front that looks out onto the quiet street. It’s difficult to realise quite how big this pub is until you get inside – there are even pillars in some places, presumably keeping that heavy ceiling up.

Split into a front bar and a back bar, The De Beauvoir is a pub that really needs to be doing well, such is its size, if it isn’t populated with bodies it can feel cavernous and yawning.

The food is of good quality – think alternative gastro classics like bavette steak, Tamworth bacon chops and Portuguese fish stews – and a good range of wine. We’re not sold by the beers on tap (San Miguel, Becks and Budvar) and the generic ‘artwork’ on the walls looks like it came free with the frames but since there’s an open fire, armchairs and a general wood appreciation going on, we can let that slide. The De Beauvoir Arms is a great pub for groups, Sunday roasts and Friday night piano concertos but we’re not sure how that space might treat you on a quiet Tuesday night.

Poised between the traffic-choked Dalston strip and manic Essex Road, Southgate Road quietly goes about its business with some of the best cafés, pubs and delis in this neck of the woods.

It’s mostly free of high street shops and traffic, with the beautiful Rosemary Gardens and Regent’s Canal at one end, De Beauvoir Square just a stroll away, and rows of pretty Georgian terraces lining it and the streets nearby.

A cracking pinot at The De Beauvoir Arms, an upmarket pub with no TV, serving posh Mediterranean food and boasting an awesome wine list.

Great gourmet ready meals and coffee at the other deli round these parts: De Beauvoir Deli.

Easy to miss, on the corner of Southgate Road and Balls Pond Road, this little place does brilliant Vietnamese food in a stylish setting.

Steaks cooked on the parrilla follow the Argentinean theme, with bife de lomo, bife ancho and bife de chorizo alongside tira de asado - Argentine-style beef short ribs.

Alongside the steaks there are burgers, fish of the day dishes, traditional Argentinean stews and empanadas, of course.

Argentinean reds feature prominently on the wine list, complemented by bottles from France and Chile.

There's Malamado on the list too - a fortified malbec dessert wine served chilled.
