You might think that something as modest as a cafe on the side of a towpath, used by neighbouring residents as a jogging and cycling route, would always remain hidden and truly a gem.

Towpath Cafe sprang up sometime in the 1st quarter of this year (my,my how the year has flown by) , and since, it has won many a fan, from nearby Shoreditch and further afield.

The quirky little caff was started by food writer Lori de Mori and her award winning food photoging hubby Jason Lowe (great portfolio!)

It opens at 8am on weekdays and for elevenses on weekends serving breakfast, lunch and snacks into dusk on a seasonal, and all too brief menu – and I assume – , cash only, and food does run out.

It is difficult to write something definitive about this type of caff, for one, the menu is ephemeral, but then again, this is also the sort of caff, where it isn’t about conventions nor comprehension or exposition, but rather it is about its incalculable qualities.

Those of you who regularly pass Whitmore Bridge on Hackney’s stretch of Regents Canal may have noticed something new appear on the banks.

That might be us; Towpath Cafe, located waterside in the thriving area of Hoxton, London’s east-end.

We are a pleasant walk along the canal from either direction, and easily accessible from Kingsland Road, Broadway Market and Islington.

Behind  the counter you’ll find a friendly, warm and family-like dynamic waiting to serve you with scrumptious treats and fine coffee imported directly from Caffe Piansa, Firenze, Italy.

Granted, canal walks are best taken during summer months but such is the appeal of the Towpath Café most would be happy to brave winter walks along a frozen canal to get a slice of this idyllic venue.Located on the Regents Canal, north of Kingsland Road, Towpath is roughly equidistant between Victoria Park and Camden.

Originally operating as a simple hatch in one of the industrial units that line the canal, the café has now spread so it is able to offer seating in further carved out spaces, which are set back from the water.

Sure, you can bask in the sun in summer but wrap up if the weather’s cold because there is no escape.Serving anything from artisan meats and cheeses to the best coffee you can get on the canal, people come for more than just the serene location.

On weekends extra seating is moored against the towpath in the form of a large floating platform and the outdoor cookout begins.

The blood orange juice is always worth sampling and there is a small selection of wine, along with a Bellini of sorts that we got to sample on our last visit.Great food, great coffee, good wine and one of the most charming locations in London, Towpath Café sells itself.

This simple operation on Regent’s Canal towpath (near the Whitmore Bridge) was a novelty when it opened in 2010 in three shallow units.

Three years later, it has expanded into four units, and continues to lure in passing walkers and cyclists with its original setting and enticing food and drink.

Our last visit, however, was a rainy affair – yet it proved that Towpath shouldn’t only be reserved for fair weather.

Huddling inside the covered, homely (think beaten-up furniture and cultural posters) open unit watching rain pummelling the canal was a comforting experience, made more so by the addition of delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and decent coffee.
