On a Kensington site that's had a somewhat chequered history of late, a smart but somewhat subdued bistro offering food English dishes of very high quality, under the auspices of Square chef Philip Howard.

Her efforts to make a go of the Kensington site she's also owned for some time - once called Abingdon Road, and more recently Bistrot Eleven - never seem to have been crowned with great success.

Though they are in a street long associated with restaurants (and one that leads into one of the most chichi Kensington backwaters), Abingdon Road has always struck us as rather a forlorn thoroughfare, and the recent establishments on this site have never managed to transcend their location.

Perhaps, though, the cooking here will make it 'third time lucky' for Ms M. It's certainly of a very high quality (and it's already driving the foodie end of the Twitterati to heights of ecstasy).

One very much senses here the inspiration of Arbutus, a seminal West End success of recent times.

Her Sonny's, in Barnes, may be credited as a mid-'80s fore-runner of the '90s London restaurant revolution.

The name of that establishment may mean little to those who get lost outside Zone 1, but Sonny's has consistently been hailed by residents of the SWs numbered 13-19 as one of London's most satisfactory destinations for nearly two decades.

This latest opening - bringing Ms M's current stable to four in number - is in a quiet road just off Kensington High Street that looks set to (re-)emerge as a 'restaurant row' worth remembering.

If there is a criticism, it is that the whole of the style - which includes a menu of what might be described as ambitious comfort cooking - is not so very different from what's already on offer at two other places in the street.

Experience shows that it's better for restaurants to cluster than to be isolated, but potentially four good 'modern British' restaurants (almost) in a row?

The Abingdon is a long-established local restaurant and bar on Abingdon Road, just off the beaten track of High St Kensington.

Taken over by Peter Staples and his daughter Susannah in 1998, The Abingdon aims to provide consistently excellent food with great service.

Head Chef Alasdair Fraser joined the Abingdon in 2006 providing a menu that ranges from Modern European to the more exotically influenced dishes on the menu.

All of what the Abingdon upholds is what makes this bar and restaurant still of the most popular destinations in Kensington.

A restaurant and wine bar tucked away amongst the townhouses, villas and mews of Kensington.

It's a relatively versatile space, with booth seating, a bar and a separate restaurant giving its clientele - usually the well-heeled locals - the kind of flexibility to which they are accustomed.

The modern-European menu ranges from parmesan soufflé with quince, alfalfa and a walnut and chicory salad to North Sea cod served with olive oil mash, Swiss chard, samphire, balsamic fig, pomegranate and purple kale.

There are no beers on tap but a good range available by the bottle.

A varied wine list takes in the old world and new, with organic and biodynamic bottles available alongside a few on offer by the glass.
